Were you ever a fan of roller coasters ?

I shouldn't have said "were" --- maybe some of you still go on them ! *wink!* LOL

When I was a kid,we had a big amusement park that the kids would flock to. It had this HUGE, Creaky, old rickety WOODEN roller coaster --- it looked like instant death to me as a kid. When my friends finally talked me into going -- by the time I waited and got to the front of the line , I usually chickened out.

Now they have these Soul Crushing , Gasping for air , pee in your pants coasters that go upside down,backwards, do loop de loops ,through tunnels ..... OMG ..... I'd need a ambulance standing by at the end to give me CPR !!!

I'll stick to the merry-go-round thankyouverymuch ~~~~
 

I was a huge fan of coasters years ago.

I grew up near a park in New York called Playland (it was in the Tom Hank's film Big), and my parents would take us kids there at least 2x a month in the summer.

They had The Dragon Coaster, a monster wooden coaster that was built in 1929 by Fred Church, a famous ride designer. I can't count the number of times I had my kidneys shaken up on that ride.

I've ridden coasters in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, California, Florida, Texas ...

Yeah, I like coasters. :D
 
I loved the roller coaster when I was a kid in the 50's. New Jersey had the Cyclone in Palisades Amusement Park. When I was able to go on my own by bus with a group of friends that was the first ride we headed for.. My Mom would always tell me to stay off the roller coaster. It was all wood and made a terrible noise but I couldn't resist especially when all the other kids went on. 5-con-cyclone1-500x308.jpg

I LOVED roller coasters. I remember the old rickety wooden one at the zoo, always a line to get on! I loved that climb to the top of the big dip, then the thrill of going down. :) I used to ride over & over. Amazing ....I never heard about anyone getting hurt.

I've heard of the newer fancy coasters that do all kinds of things. Yikes. :eek:mg1:
 
I always loved roller coasters, that feeling when the bottom drops out.

Last time I went to an amusement park, I went on a ride that strapped everyone into a device that looked like a giant centrifuge, then it spun us both horizontally and vertically at the same time. I could barely walk when I got off that thing and the balance mechanism in my inner ear was disturbed for months afterward. A doctor friend had a fit and said didn't I realize those rides are for kids. I guess I finally figured that out. For some of us the learning curve is steeper than it is for others.
 
Dating in high school, a rollercoaster was a perk

It's just NERVOUSNESS. A long time ago there was a comic strip called "Little Annie Rooney" And she used to say that.

(Maybe it was the "Wim Wams. It was eons ago.)
 
My wife and son used to wheedle until we'd go to the amusement park.

One time we went to a place called Knoebels, a very family-oriented park in PA, and we proceeded to march around the hundreds of acres in the sweltering heat.

Well, Mom and son wanted to go on a roller coaster, I said I'd sit this one out. I found an empty bench beneath some shade and watched as they got into the cars and began their ascent up the first big hill. Wave!

The cars got stuck on the ascent.

They were there for about 20 minutes.

Long enough for me to grab a Slushee and a burger and chat up the cute waitress. :pepper:
 
I liked roller coasters. Been on some of the biggest, around the US. That being said, I absolutely refuse to stand in the cattle chutes that exist at the most popular amusement parks, these days, for up to two hours, to ride an attraction that's done in under a minute, or so. So, I haven't been on a roller coaster for over fifteen years.
 
No, never liked roller coasters even as a kid and especially wouldn't go on one now with all the amusement ride accidents and deaths lately. I did enjoy the ferris wheel though.
 
I was crazy about merry-go-rounds when I was a little kid but was very choosy about which horses were suitable, never one without a tail. Must have driven my poor old mum insane.

I left the carousel horses behind in favour of the Ferris wheel and roller-coaster as a teenager and adult. Not now though, get dizzy just thinking out it.

The last amusement ride I took was when my partner and I went to the UK in 1993. I couldn't resist revisiting my childhood when I saw the beautiful old carousel on Blackpool Pier.

I loved to ride roller coasters as well as most rides at the parks. One of my favorites memories was at Springlake Park In Oklahoma City. This was in the early 1960s. It was one of the old wooden ones and at night there were no lights on the back part where the steepest drop was. It was an eerie feeling.

The rides today are much bigger and more twists and turns. If only I was young again.
 
My father was afraid of roller coasters, and my mother was afraid of ferris wheels (it was when they were loading and you would swing back and forth). Anyway when I was a kid she would take me on the roller coaster and he, on the ferris wheel. I didn't like the roller coaster at all---going down that first hill. Nope.

I remember that...born and raised in Staten Island.
Bunch of us went by bus too,wound up in the Port Authority very late and didn't have a problem,not sure If do it again
