School resource officer helped end standoff

The incident began about 11:30 a.m. when Randal Davidson, a 53-year-old social studies teacher, refused to let students into his classroom, Frazier said. When the principal put a key in the door in an attempt to enter, Davidson fired a shot from a handgun through an exterior window of the classroom, according to Frazier.

The school immediately went into lockdown, and police quickly arrived and evacuated the immediate area around his classroom. After about 30 to 45 minutes, Davidson agreed to surrender to authorities and was taken into custody without further incident, Frazier said.

Frazier said there was no evidence that Davidson was trying to fire at anyone.
"It certainly seemed like he didn't have any intention to harm anybody else," Frazier said.

Dalton Police said the school resource officer, who had a close relationship with school staff, was at the junior high school when the incident began and then came to Davidson's classroom. The officer was able to speak to Davidson and persuade him to leave his room without harming anyone.

Appears so. No other logical explanation. None.

If he was contemplating suicide, why at the school? Why does everything have to be unloaded at a school or in a crowd?

I like the way the school and law authorities were trying to minimize the teacher's actions. This person must be insane, even bringing a gun to school. I remember back when I was in high school, we had several boys that drove their own vehicles to school. Some would go hunting in the morning before coming to school and would actually bring their rifles with them hanging on a gun rack inside their pickup. I can't ever remember any kid even threatening to go get his gun to settle a dispute.

You cannot deny the mental attitude has changed drastically from the good old days.

Do you remember the degree of respect we had for teachers?

My dad tells me how when he went to school which would have been in the mid-30's, the kids came mostly from the same neighborhoods and played together and their parents all knew each other, and the teachers knew every one of them and their parents. He'd say how sometimes when he and his friends would see a teacher walking up the street, they knew that the teacher was going to visit one of their parents and someone was going to be in trouble. :p

Now the population has increased so much and children are crowded into classrooms and most don't know each other outside of school and teachers no longer make house calls. it's a different world now.
