Distracted Driving While Eating

We know that talking on a cell phone distracts but what about people who eat while driving? Saw a guy swerve yesterday while chomping down on a huge burger and losing the condiments down his front.

Do you consider that a distraction? Maybe it depends on what you are eating? A few fries might be ok? or not?

Yep. Although that scenario wouldn't fall under the "distracted driving" law here in Ontario, it would fall under the "careless driving" law that deals with "driving with due care and attention.

Careless Driving covers that as well as falling asleep at the wheel, sight seeing while your driving etc. It was also the go to charge before they brought out a specific law for being distracted by an electronic device.

Should mention that I've charged and convicted many drivers Mizzkitt during my career for this exact scenario. Eating, reading a map, putting on makeup. I even charged a guy who was playing cribbage with his passenger.

Craziest thing I saw about 30 years ago was a person with a fat paperback book between her legs while she was stopped at a stop light next to me. Then she got on to the interstate!!

Who was winning, driver or passenger? :D

When I was working I'd see several gals a week going 55 or 60 mph putting on their war paint while driving to work in the morning......just a accident waiting to happen.

Seeing people eating, texting or talking on the phone while driving is pretty much commonplace anymore but certainly no less dangerous.

Just for the record I don't talk on the phone, text or put on my war paint while driving but I have been known to munch on a burger or a hot dog a time or two while driving.

I've heard that some guys have been seen shaving while driving. Fortunately, I haven't encountered any of them.

I was once behind a woman in the right lane that was going very slowly on a 40mph road. I'm a mellow driver myself and try not to go over the speed limit, but this car was too slow for me to follow, but no emergency flashers on.

I passed her up in the middle lane and looked over to see what was going on. She had a huge Ice cream sundae , still with the whipped cream mounds and cherry on top. She was balancing it on her steering wheel and leaning forward as she was eating it with her long plastic spoon. There were a lot of empty parking lots on either side of us that she could have just pulled into to eat her sundae instead of causing a traffic disturbance.

Definitely a hazard.

I saw a gentleman with a hand puppet entwined in there steering wheel and holding a conversation with it!!

My cousin was an over-the-road truck driver. He said you wouldn't believe the things he has seen looking down from the cab of a tractor-trailer truck. :D People do really strange things in their cars.

Even getting in an excited conversation, looking over at passengers, or dealing with kids is a distraction and dangerous. Drivers should on their driving and the road - PERIOD.

Back in mid 90s a former co-worker's wife was trying to drive while dealing with 2 kids, and their puppy jumped into the pedals...she was killed.

My very first fatal collision that I investigated. Grandma was in the backseat with a grandchild. Her son and his wife just picked her up from the airport for her yearly summer visit (she lived in Germany). As they were going down the highway grandma put the window and was shaking some crumbs off of a small lap blanket out the window. Son turned around to tell her not to do that, he drove onto the shoulder, panicked, over corrected, car rolled several times and grandma went out the side window (not wearing a seatbelt) and the car rolled on top of her. Everyone else fortunately walked away.

Even being distracted for a couple of seconds can change your life forever.

Years ago my husbands aunt got pulled over for swerving all over the road. She had to tell him she was trying to get out of her girdle. She said the embarrassment alone was punishment enough.

I got that beat. I arrested a young man (25) for masturbating while driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike doing 88 in a 70 zone. He couldn’t get his you know what put away before I walked up to the car. I looked at him and said, “You gotta’ be kidding me.”

When I was in my mid 20s I'd been drinking and dancing all night with my new bf and we both knew how the night was going to end. In the car at about 1:00 AM we stopped at a traffic light (he was driving) and found if difficult to wait until we got to my apt. So we started to fool around, and he saw a police car pull up ..... and we stopped what we were doing. I scooted back into the passenger's side. Dodged that bullet! :D

You win!!

911.....James.....

Ever catch a couple in the act in a car, and what do you do?

Teens used to find a deserted road and "park" but I don't know if they do that anymore.

If that bothers you think about the big rig driver of a fuel tanker talking on his CB while downing a big Mac.

...and yes I have driven while eating and talking on my short wave radio and guess what no vehicle axidents in more than 30 years.

Many many times. Behind Malls, Back roads, side streets, underground parking, farmers fields, Cemeteries, Church Parking lots, those car parks on the 401 402 403 were always popular.

Always "lit them up" so they knew it was the popo. Always wanted to ensure there are two consenting adults. Usually it was an affair, not too many hormone filled teens.
