Does your city or town offer bikes throughout the city for people to use for free ?

When bikes like these were first introduced in Scottsdale and downtown Phoenix a few years ago I thought it was a waste of money at the time. I thought nobody would use them and that the bikes would be trashed. Once again, I was wrong. It's nice to see that people are using them all over the area.

Yes, they've had the yellow and lime colored bikes available in my area for over a year now, I see people riding them but I've never used one myself, have my own bike if I need it.

The city where I live is launching a pilot program in June.

I hope that it helps to create a little buzz with visitors to the city.

IMO the key will be in maintaining and redistributing the bicycles to popular starting points around the city. My city is great at launching new programs but not so great when it comes to maintaining them.

Yes we do.

It is working fine, but I would not use one. At my age I had to purchase a lightweight bicycle, because of the hilly terrain around our city.

The reason I did this was because one day I weighed my bike and it came to 29 lbs. I thought "Oh my goodness, I've been peddling a "sack of potatoes" up those hills." I found my present bike on Craigslist, and it is a beauty - it weighs 18 lbs, and is a joy to ride (except for my wreck, which was not good - 1.5 days in ER). One day I picked up a rental bike just for fun, and I could tell it weighed over 30 lbs.---- so, no rental bike for me!.

Of course the lightweight bikes are pretty expensive, but it was worth it to me. Those hills are much easier for me, with my Roubaix Fuji with 24 speeds (and I use all of them --- but try to stay on the path!)
