White Coat Hypertension: Unbelievable Spin, Today!

Hari Om, y'all!
Location
Austin, TX.
I've been shouting the realities of this condition for many years: You go to your doctor, you are kept waiting and waiting, suddenly, your name is called, you're hustled into a room where a person, whose title you're unsure of, takes your blood pressure, goosing up the cuff to about 200 mmHg! (My arm would hurt for two days afterwards.)

In this scenario, I used to test as borderline hypertension, even though I knew, from taking my bp at home, on a professional automated unit, that my usual bp was low normal with a low normal pulse. That being the case, I started to refuse blood pressure tests at the doctor's office. Now, leave it to Big Med and Big Pharma to spin this to their favor.

On the news tonight: If you suffer from White Coat Hypertension, there's an 80% increase in the chances of you dying from a heart attack IF other stressors effect you the same way. SO, we should start you on hypertension drugs even sooner than what we thought, before. Before that, we need you to wear a monitor, for a week, that monitors your bp, constantly. Sure, wearing that monitor won't make you more tense, right? This is nonsense! Take your bp several times a day. My unit gives me a history of readings.

If you are recording high bp when you're relaxed, in your home, taking it easy, well, yeah, you might want to consider further testing. Other than that, I'm calling NONSENSE, on this new finding! No other situation on this planet puts me in a position where I'm startled, led into a room to have my arm squeezed to the point of acute pain, and then told I may be borderline for hypertension. BAH!

Yeah, that's me too. The same scenario, relatively high at the doctor's, much lower when I take it myself at home.

On one occasion I was kept waiting over an hour, only to see the doctor stroll out of his office, and back in again, with a cup of coffee while I waited another half an hour to see him.

As you can imagine my blood pressure was high on that visit, resulting in my medication being increased.

The increased dosage eventually started to make me dizzy so I just cut it back to where it was before. I told the next doctor that I saw (a different one) what I had done and was assured that my blood pressure was ok, so that reduced dosage was quite enough.

Roll on another couple of years and probably a total of four different doctors, all of whom have been told that I am taking a reduced dose, and every refill still has that increased dose printed on the prescription.

No wonder we suffer from 'white coat hypertension'.

Mine's is always high when I go to the doctor, but I don't go every year so that makes it easier. Today I took my blood pressure at Walmart, 120 something over 70 something, really has never been a problem but I'm sure they try to put you on meds if they can. I think they're lowering all the number for various tests so everyone is considered sick enough to medicate. If I felt I had a hypertension problem, I'd treat it naturally as opposed to prescription drugs.....that to me is a last resort.

Just curious , how would you treat it "naturally" ?

I just saw on the news this week that they have new "guidelines" for what constitutes high blood pressure. I guess Big Pharma wants more people on medication... but don't get me started on THAT. (My BP will go up.)

Info on new guidelines... https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/reading-the-new-blood-pressure-guidelines

My pet peeve is that the assistants in the doctor's office don't seem to KNOW HOW to correctly take BP measurements. They barely let you sit down, have your arm at the incorrect angle, pump the pressure up too high, and then ask you a lot of stupid questions while you are supposed to "sit quietly." If they get a high reading on me, I make them take it again and the correct way.

My doc (who actually is a PA and has some common sense) says that many, many people in America are way overmedicated for high blood pressure, and that overmedication or unnecessary medication leads to dizziness and falls, and I forgot what all else. Mine is usually slightly up when I'm in the doctor's office, but not at home.

I'll shorten a long story.....Sitting at an outside coffee shop, I over heard a conversation that caused me to [politely] butt-in / ask a question. The conversation was between two nurse /PA's . And the subject was the over-medicating by the med-industry of seniors . They were both in-home care givers...and they said / indicated that it had become so bad, that is was what caused them to seek the required license and branch out on their own.

What an education I received that day. Some scary stuff indeed.

I was still young enough then that my questions were mostly idle curiosity, and concern for my mother . I wish I could speak with them today.

It’s a well known fact that your heart rate and blood pressure go up while being tested at the doctors office. My heart rate is well below 60 bpm and my blood pressure generally very good but if I ever get it checked at the doctors office, it’s way higher. Because of this the staff always suggest getting a BP reading at Walmart or someplace other than the doctors office.
And surely it doesn’t surprise you that they want to prescribe pills for you. You needing prescription pills is how they make their living. They aren’t going to prescribe garlic.

Actually, it's not a well-known fact, only drawing in researchers starting in 1983. I've been shouting about it, mostly to those who never heard of it, before, for the last three decades, even though the research never made the popular press, and I never knew it was going on. Being picky, the first report on it goes back to 1896. Again, I know that I was never told about it, by any doctors I ever visited. As you say, they'd much rather convince you that you have a problem and get you on meds, so they can get their kick-back benefits from Big Pharma.

Same here. Always high at the doctors. I keep a record on my iPhone and show it to hin or her. It’s always normal or too low at home.

My BP always seems to be elevated at the doctors office......

According to the results in YOUR own THREAD, it’s common knowledge.

A simple ‘thank you’ woulda worked treeboy.

OK, Garlic & avoid Ike's nurse....Got it....:)

Now are we talking raw Garlic only? Or is a Garlic supplement acceptable ?
I would [of course] really like to get off any med I can.

What about water retention?...that has started recently.....:(

In double-blind studies using garlic preparations to treat hypertension or high blood pressure, a daily dose of at least 10 mg. of allicin, readings dropped with an average of 11 mm Hg for the systolic and 5.0 for the diagnostic within a period of 1 to 3 months.

This article should explain it better.

There are some good supplements like deodorized garlic capsules but it’s recommended to take fresh garlic. Even cooking it destroys a lot of the allicin.

So the choice of course is yours.

It goes without saying that too much fresh garlic may interfere with intimacy.
Just sayin’

My father in law got put on medication for high blood pressure and then later decided to try garlic. He started getting a bit dizzy and went to his doctor. His blood pressure had dropped so much AND he was still on the same dosage as the doctor had prescribed. Combined it had lowered his blood pressure too much so the doctor weaned him off his medication and said he didn’t need it.

So if you are going to try treating your hypertension holistically while already on medication, make sure to consult with your doctor so he/she can safely wean you off of it.

Another safer alternative is to see an Naturopath Doctor. They have the same education as regular doctors and THEN SOME.

Modern medicine isn’t necessarily better. It’s just newer. Holistic medicine has been around for centuries. It’s just not sponsored by the Big Pharma Plus so doesn’t have the sane endorsement

Yes I have read [some] of this already....I just can't imagine eating 2 or so cloves of pure Garlic ?! p/day. Seeing the Naturopath is on the list. I have spoken with someone here before about this...[perhaps you] ?

Thanks........

You are most welcome and yes that was me in another thread. :)
