Mother's Day breakfast in bed???

Is it mostly a TV or print ad thing, or do people really celebrate and enjoy this custom?

Breakfast in bed always strikes me as a very weird thing to do. First of all, before most civilized humans eat anything we want to hit the bathroom and brush our teeth, meaning we're out of bed already anyway. Secondly, being personally very clumsy, the tradition of balancing even the most stable of trays on an chancy surface like a bed, not to mention having hot coffee and juice on that tray? Talk about a recipe for disaster. I waved my husband off from this tradition when we first got married (something very specific like, "I love you, Honey, and appreciate all your efforts to make me feel special, but please don't ever serve me breakfast in bed unless you want to spend the rest of the day scrubbing the mattress.")

The only times I've eaten breakfast in bed were while in the hospital and I didn't love the experience. Is it just me?

It isn't just you, Starsong. I absolutely agree with everything you said. And I have to wonder, aside from the people in the comic strips, if anybody really does this.

I can't imagine a person being so lazy that they can't get up to eat ! It has to be mostly "made for tv" stuff.

I wouldn't like breakfast in bed, either. First off, I don't want to eat when I first wake up -- never have. And secondly, just one spill could make a very big mess and eating in bed requires a precarious balancing act. In the hospital it is a different matter -- those beds adjust where you can sit up comfortably and they have those rolling tray tables to pull over in front of you so you don't have to balance the food on your lap.

I honestly believe that rich, famous, celebrity type mother's can be, and some are, served breakfast in bed on Mother's Day. If I was a young mother and had that happen, I think it would be "so cool" and I'd be ecstatic seeing my husband, along with kids following him into the bedroom, to give it to me. As far as spilling anything, that's what a bedside stand is for. Any beverage would be put there. If the father and kids just happen not to be around, the Maid may just do it......"Happy Mother's Day Madam!"

However, many mother's of today, get taken out for breakfast to a very nice place. That's what wife and I did for her mom. We'd take her to Mimi's Café. Thing is, all of these places to take mom for breakfast get extremely crowded. But, my wife's mom absolutely loved it.
