Good Bye Good People

When you leave a club or quit your job in life you can't listen in to what people say about you when you're gone.

The internet is funny that way because you can.

Lon is online at SF right now. He hasn't gone anywhere.
(click on any of his posts, notice the dot which is the online indicator beside his name...if it's green the person is online and active in the forum, or look at his profile and it tells where he is right now, and/or look at the forum home page - list of members currently online. Exceptions would be people who have adjusted their settings to remain invisible.)

He's peeking to see what everyone is saying about him. Sheesh. How...dramatic!

Guess he's taking a break from working on that book he says he writing, huh?

:lofl:

A little unfair I feel... Lon is in his 80's, many of us have known him here for several years. if he were to suddenly disappear there would be a lot of concern for him by many people here , so IMO I'd rather know he's thinking of leaving the forum, than presume the worst ..

I can see your point, Holly. But those wanting attention with the dramatic "goodbye cruel world" posts could easily PM their friends to let them know. This type of thread is simply a bid for attention and quite childish, IMO.

This is an Internet Forum...people come, people go. In recent months, I can recall several who have left this site...Quicksilver, Ameriscot, Hi Desert Hal, Toby Tyler, just to name a few. Many of them seem to have migrated over to another forum....where they continue to agitate each other. It's kind of fun to check that forum occasionally, and notice that they haven't changed much. This forum is kind of "tame" compared to some, but that is probably a good thing, for those who just want to chat, or ask a specific question without getting jumped on. Also, there are a lot of people here who just play "word" games, but that, too, is good...as these games can help a Senior stay mentally sharp. Then, there are the occasional "trolls" who appear....the last one was calling herself "ancient mariner"...she jumped in, posted about irrelevant 40 posts per day, then left after a couple of weeks....good riddance, IMO.

This site is probably about as good as it gets for Seniors who just want to maintain some communications with people of similar circumstances. Political discussions, etc., can be of value...IF people can be civil, but that is sometimes wishful thinking. SO....if someone is becoming irritated with a given Internet Forum, their best approach is just to spend their time elsewhere.

I do, however, wish that more people would put something meaningful in their "profiles"...at least Gender, and a general idea of where they live....it's sometimes hard to make a reply when they won't even reveal their Gender.

@Don M.

I don't remember Toby Tyler
- Ameriscot was banned after a snarky 'farewell'. (Amazing how she was always able to type with her hands on her hips. Of course she had the assistance of her clique  )
- Quicksilver was also banned, but she hadn't posted in awhile - actually imo she was quite sharp politically, very well-informed on political and general social issues.
- ancient mariner...a driveby, banned….I agree good riddance

I tend to agree re:gender and state (or geographical area) in profiles.

Yep I see your point too C'est Moi....over the years that I've been here and many other forums as well as being a Mod on 2 , I couldn't count how many people have made dramatic exists, but in this instance it's simply because Lon has been a long time member, has recently had quite a few health issues, I just felt that knowing he was leaving of his own accord was better than thinking he may have died..
I'd think the same of any member who had been a member for a long time. :)

I agree, maybe we need a "Spare The Drama"sign? These kind of threads never end.....they become ....boring.

Lon left because of being self-uninformed on the new rule of no politics (thus removal of his political threads, causing him frustration). I'm guessing Lon didn't read the repeated efforts by Matrix to alert him, so Lon continued to start political threads according to post#18. When they were removed Lon took it personally but it's not personal...that's just the rule now.

It was voted on by the members here and admin complied plus took on the responsibility to enforce the popular vote. If it wasn't for Matrix monitoring the Senior Forum site here, we wouldn't have as nice a forum to come to as we do.

I agree Holly, it's nice when long time members let us know their reasons for leaving so we know if it's serious health issues or not.

Agree entirely Lara. although I rarely ever involved myself in it, the Politics threads did turn into a cess pit of vipers many times, and I totally agreed with Matrix's decision to give everyone the opportunity to keep it or remove it.

It was all just a shame that people coudn't debate without blood letting!!

It's been a much nicer forum since it was removed, and as has been said by others here, there are Political forums elsewhere where people can tear each other apart if that's their bag.

I’m glad this was brought up because I couldn’t for the life of me understand what Lon was getting at when he kept saying his posts are missing. I wasn’t sure whether he was possibly starting to lose it or if admin was really deleting his posts and why.

I think Lara is right in that he didn’t understand that the no politics was a forum decision and not something personal.
Maybe I’m just a big softie but I really feel bad for the guy. He clearly was frustrated.

Other things on this forum didn’t quite make sense but now I’m starting to understand that there used to be a politics section and now there isn’t. When did this take place? Recently?

The poll re: politics and the subsequent ban of such threads was in September 2017 - 8 months ago. It was clearly announced on the board, and people were reminded many times.

As far as Lon, he didn't really discuss politics per se - it was always Trump, Trump, Trump. He was VERY well aware of the ban, but he kept on posting Trump threads and complaining about the way the media treats Trump and asking people how they feel about Trump. With him it was Trump ad nauseum, and his threads were deleted. He received a couple temporary time-outs, then he would come back and find sneaky ways to start more Trump threads.

Lon,I'm sorry to read that you are leaving,I've enjoyed reading your posts.
I've only been a member here since Aug'17,this site is so much more friendlier than AARP where I spent 5 yrs. I like that there are more interesting discussions here, some of the members live in different places in the world, get a different perspective on things. Sue

Hmm, Lon never seemed like the rebellious type. I've never read any political posts from Lon but after the ban I have wondered sometimes if some of his posts are heavily "assisted" by staff at his Assisted Care Living Facility...perhaps entering their own thoughts and embellishments. I sometimes saw advertisement links for Oakmont at the end of his posts. And many praises for Oakmont "from Lon" (or was it Lon?). I don't know. I'm just theorizing.
