Anyone know what this is?

It is indeed a chrome plated lug nut..usually used on alloy wheels / custom wheels..closed end to protect the threads of the stud .

Cheers IKE! I had to change my own tire once on the side of the road so this is something I'll never forget :drive:

I did end up getting a lot of much need attention before I was through (I was young with a child).

....a man in a truck on his way home from work...and "work" was at a repair garage.

...then 4 college guys pulled over behind the truck guy.

...then a police car pulled over behind the college guys and wanted to know what all the commotion was about

...meanwhile, my 4 yr old daughter told me she was in the car praying that God would send someone to help me.

I told her that the guy in the truck was probably an angel. She said, "I didn't know angels had beards :D

The topic of lug nuts reminded me of this old story.

Mr Jones is driving past the state mental hospital when his left rear tire suffers a flat. While Mr Jones is changing the tire, another car goes by, running over the hub cap in which Mr Jones was keeping the lug nuts. the nuts are all knocked into a nearby storm drain.

Mr Jones is at a loss for what to do and is about to go call a cab when he hears a shout from behind the hospital fence, where one of the inmates has been watching the whole thing.

"Hey, pal! Why don't you just take one lug nut off each of the other three wheels? That'll hold your tires on until you can get to a garage or something."

Mr Jones is startled by the patient's seeming rationality, but realises the plan will work, and installs the spare tire without incident. Before he leaves, he calls back to the patient. "You know, that was pretty sharp thinking. Why do they have you in there?"

The patient smiles and says, "I'm in here because I'm crazy, not because I'm stupid."

My dad, and I ,were on the way to go fishing, he was driving my 1948 Willis car, I was looking out the window when, I saw a tire go past the car on my side, I said to dad someone lost a tire, it wasn't but a minute before the car fell on the hub, we got out and put the tire back on the hub, and took a lug nut from some of the other wheels, we went fishing, and had a good time.
