Retired Three Years And Still Dream Of Working!

I am not complaining but a lot of my dreams are about working but not about the work I did. They are pleasant dreams but why don't I dream Marilyn Monroe is chasing me? Strange but I never dream when I nap, only when I sleep at night.

It's called sublimation.

I'm not sure that is correct. The word "unacceptable" does not fit. I actually enjoy the dreams because they are puzzling because they differ in location and people meaning the environment is totally made up. I wake up reviewing the dream and wonder where did that workplace and people come from?! I guess I am a jack of all trades in my dreams.

I have been retired 18 yrs, I still dream about the people I worked with...the place I worked, but not the actual work it'self. Odd as it is, many of the dreams involve golf...I've never played a round of golf in my life. The other activity in my dreams is boating...I've never owned a boat, nor do I care for boating really.

IMO, it is just something so ingrained in our minds...we don't let it go, and it manifest itself in a pleasing manner ?

I dream almost every night. Always something pleasant , or maybe silly. Never 'nightmarish'.

Six months after I pulled the plug, I encountered a bunch of my previous workmates.
They'd heard that I regretted my choice enormously and was all depressed and unhappy.

I was able to assure them with great vigour that nothing was further from the truth - and that two weeks after I walked out the door I could barely remember half their names.

I still dream about working, but they aren't pleasant dreams. In my dreams, something is always going wrong that's out of my control, but I'm expected to take care of it. Just like it was up until eight years ago.

That is exactly what I dream, too, and that's the way it was at my job, too.

Typical exchange:

Attorney: Why the **#**@ won't my computer come on?
Me: There is a power failure in this area, as I already told you.
Atty: Well, *#*&&^, what are you doing about it?
Me: I don't have any control over the power grid.
Atty: Well, I want you to DO something about it. NOW!!

Starsong,
as a retired prof. I always dream that I cannot find my classroom or I am unprepared to
teach or something else unpleasant that startles me. I think it is common---maybe it means you
have lost direction in your life.

Have you ever tried journaling your dreams when you have them? I sometimes dream of weird stuff like riding a horse only it has bicycle pedals that make it go but then he'll stop and eat grass along side of the road and I'm still pedaling like crazy. I create some short stories out of my dreams then tell them to the grandkids. It's a good ice breaker too, you would not believe the dreams they've had that they've told me about. Positively blush inducing.

Also, are you sure you want to dream about a deceased woman chasing you? Perhaps it might help if your fantasy woman was a total fantasy or at least one from the world of the living.

Sweet Dreams!

Ah, Victor, probably not. Having more direction has never been my intent or goal. Deep down I am a 14th century nomadic soul who was born six centuries too late.

I think those dreams are probably just (new) general anxieties finding an old comfortable rut to settle in while I sleep.

I still dream about work sometimes and rarely about school, they're never pleasant dreams but not quite nightmares.

I never dream of any family members. Mine are always about friends, former lovers and coworkers. Typically I am at a party or work an it is night time. I am often not sure where my vehicle is parked and at times when I'm in my vehicle I am not sure how to get where I want to go. I used to dream i quit my job, the one I really had and took a job for straight commission but not sales and it freaks me out because I made good money with a lot of security. I don't have that dream anymore.
