Are we going to be the last generation to remember the greats of yesteryear?

Franks S..Dean M , June Allyson, Donald O'connor, Doris Day, Debbie Reynolds, Howard keel, John Wayne, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford Alan Ladd... so many stars of yesteryear who have no offspring in the business to continue the family showbiz ancestry

I was just thinking, because I'm just over 60. and they were famous long before I was born, and I grew up watching them, and I believe we ''younger seniors' are likely to be the last to fully remember .....they were my parents heroes and heroines.. so , before the next generation is out, I can just imagine very few people knowing who these huge stars of stage and screen were.. whaddya think?
 

I have over the air, antenna, tv now, and there are many channels that carry the old movies. Classics, westerns, you name it. As long as these channels exist, I think their names will live on Holly. Oh, and Roku has all kinds of old movies with the late, great stars.
 
The same goes for people of history.. I mentioned a few names to my 13 year old Grandson and he had no clue too who I was talking about!!

yes I thought that too Pappy, but I don't think the younger generation would be drawn to those films...they've been raised on completely different genres'. My own daughter, a very intelligent girl, at 42 has absolutely no idea who any of the people I mentioned , are...

I don't know what schools are teaching now Ken, having no grandchildren myself ... but I was continually shocked by the younger members of my staff, when they showed no knowledge of famous historical figures.. I was shocked!!.

I suppose it's the same with every generation, but it's sad to think that so many great stars are now being forgotten , and reality stars are being so revered by our young and taking the place of those with real talent.
 
Silent films and Al Jolsen were before my time but I still remember black and whites, twin beds, subdued passion and no flash and bang. When the real world gets too chaotic, I'll go old movie searching looking for reminders of a more peaceful/graceful time. Favorites Glenn Johnson, Katherine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, Claudette Colbert and the like.
 
I really like music from the 1920s and 1930s, I have quite a collection too, but this era was before my time, so I suppose that there will always be some in future generations that will look back, and, as long as there are TV adverts, there will always be background music from the greats of yesteryear to enhance the adverts.
 
Me TV, Get TV and TCM have only old shows and movies. The ladies on Charley's Angels still are attractive. One wonders what they are like today. Of course Farah Fawcett has been gone for some years. Hogan's Heros are still making monkeys our of the Nazis.
 
I suspect there will always be some people who are interested in film history and will know these names. But, younger generations, not so much. Those who appeared in really classic films like The Wizard of Oz or Gone With the Wind will be known more because these films will continue to be seen for a long time.

There were some real stars in early silent films who were very popular at the time. How many of those can you name? Rudolph Valentino, Harold Lloyd, Douglas Fairbanks, Tom Mix, Lillian Gish, etc.

The classics will always be legendary no matter what
 
Sometimes I wonder how many people would know who Marilyn Monroe was if she hadn't committed suicide. I don't think she was a great actress. One of my friend's Dad had her famous calendar in his workshop. I certainly remember that.

A few years ago the English education system dropped
history, I did hear that they are/were thinking about
starting it again.

There are old movies with the people that you mentioned
Hollydolly on Freeview and also on the BT TV sometimes.

I always thought that there was some doubt about
the suicide verdict. That it was more sinister than
that Don.

We need more talk shows like Johnny Carson!! About 90% of the ones you mentioned where guests!! Now how do we get the younger kids to watch TV??
 
If a classic entertainer's work is linked with an annual holiday...Bing Crosby's White Christmas​, for example...they will continue to enjoy at least a seasonal revival.
 
Probably we are the last to remember those particular greats, Holly. Just as our generation may have heard of Mary Pickford and John Barrymore, but we obviously don't "remember" them. I guess the next generation will remember the old greats such as the Beatles, Robert Redford, Robert de Niro, etc.
 
I have several grand kids and their friends in their 20s and I'm just shocked and sadden at the people they have never heard of!! I've just been so happy lately to find out one of my son's (age 44) likes music from the Big Band area and my daughter (in her 40s) watches old musicals. I personally am not a fan of musicals but I'm happy she at lest knows who most of the stars of yesteryears are.

That's exactly my point Linda...it's not just celebrities either, it's as someone mentioned already...important people from history!!

Mike I had absolutely no idea..I'm shocked to hear schools dropped History from the curriculum...why?..OMG...lest we forget etc...:crying:
 
It's okay, Holly, History is on the National Curriculum. :) I have grandchildren between the ages of 9 and 13 at different schools and they definitely do history. I believe that at one time certain periods of history were dropped but are now back on the curriculum.

You're welcome. Must ask them exactly what they are studying at the moment.... not that I'd be much help. I'll stick to helping grandson with French. ;)
