The great state of ...

Why do so many Americans, when referring to one of the states, always say "the great state of" (insert state name here) ?

I find this intriguing and I wonder when this habit of speech developed.

Pride within each state I assume. Not sure if it started some other way. I'd be curious too, Warrigal, to see if someone knows of another reason.

The first I noticed a lot of "The Great State of …….." was at the National Conventions. As the state votes were being announced, the announcer would always say "The Great State of ………. casts its vote for _________________!!!!"

Yes, I believe so.

I've known some people who say that about their home state to use it as a put down, meaning their state is better than others. I've known 2 or 3 people who have done that. I think it makes them sound arrogant.

The great state of; is a common phrase used by American politicians and federal courts. It's just a formal, polite, respectful way of referring to a colleague's home state. One can also refer to his or her own state as "great," --- a sign of pride in representing the citizens of that state.
Great does not refer to size necessarily (unless the state happens to be large). The meaning of "great" is purposefully vague. Every state is known for doing something well or being important in some way, and it is understood that all states are meaningful and wonderful and unique. Except maybe Rhode Island.

Aww. Poor little Rhode Island. :)

Thanks Pappy. It does seem to be a habit of speech or a convention, a bit like English barristers referring to each other as "my learned friend".

Then there is the "late great state of California". Becoming truer and truer every day, unfortunately.
