Well the darn tooth is finally out.

Yesterday, about 1 o’clock, I was setting in the oral surgeons dental chair. Out comes the 12 inch numbing needle which hurt like hell both times. This tooth, they called it no. 14 upper left in front of departed wisdom tooth, had lost its filling and there was nothing left to fill it again.

Long story short, after I was assure it won’t hurt a bit, the pliers started breaking the tooth off in pieces. Now I’ve had enough teeth pulled to know what comes next. The dreaded crow bar thingy that he uses to go down deep and pry it out. This hurt like hell as I knew it would. The dentist stopped and asked if I need another shot. Hell yes, make it a double I told him. Anyway, it helped some and out popped the root. Then the fun started. I take a blood thinner, Pradaxa, and had skipped the last two doses at doctors request.

Home again finally. Bleeding was heavy and I was going through gauze pads like crazy. I knew there would be no sleep for me tonight until I got this stopped. Finally, at 1 am the bleeding slowed down and I was totally relieved. Gonna be sore for a few days and soft foods will be on the menu, but so darn happy that’s over with.

Oh, and when the dentist tells you, ‘this won’t hurt a bit,’ tell him to kiss my grits!!!!

Hope you get to feeling better Pappy.

For future reference everyone if a dentist doesn't have a license for IV sedation oral sedation tablets work great for extensive dental procedures or extractions.....they do require a prescription and you'll need a person to come with you to drive you home and once back home you'll more than likely be groggy and sleepy pretty much all day.

On three different occasions I was prescribed three tablets, I took two 45 minutes before the appointment and the last one as soon as I plopped down in the chair before things got started.

I didn't feel squat either time and I didn't remember a thing afterwards.....the name of the drug is Halicon.

Ugh. I hate that for you!!! I pay extra for sedation because I just can't STAND all that! It's not just the pain, it's the awful sounds and vibrations resonating around in my head!!!

Thanks Pappy and Ken. I had my husband read both of your posts. He is one of those people who doesn't mind going to the dentist. He can't understand why I can't just walk in, flop down in the dentist's chair, open my mouth and say "Have at it buddy!".

I'm like your husband, Linda. I've had root canal without Novocaine. And never in a million years would I agree to be sedated for dental work. That to me, is scary.
However, I don't like water going down my throat. It makes me feel like drowning, so I make that clear at the start. Keep the water light.
I thought that was only me until I looked it up. And that is a common worry for people about getting getting dental work.

Pappy, At least now you have one less tooth to cause you pain. I had to have a tooth extracted each time I was pregnant and they wouldn't sedate me. I was surprised I didn't have the kid right then and there in the dental chair. After that I always ask to be sedated.

Every tooth I’ve ever had out, I always use novacane, has hurt towards the end of the extraction. Yesterday was bad because the tooth kept breaking apart. It’s just like when your doctor says, ‘this will pinch a little.’ Yeah sure, usually hurts like the devil.

Hi Pappy, thanks for giving us the update, glad to hear the bothersome tooth has left you.
Your description reminded me a little when my dentist removed one of my wisdom teeth in May. He gave me a couple shots of Novacaine, could still feel him yank it out.He gave me some gauze, told me not to eat any solid food for 24 hrs, rinse my mouth a couple times/day with salt&warm water.
I lost some of my wisdom that day LOL! Sue

My heart Dr had to ok the sedation surgery, he told me that the drug used is not as strong as others..
I was having multiple teeth removed to have dentures made, I elected to be sedated for the rear 4 teeth.. I had novacaine for the remaining 5 to 10 ..

In that case, Ken, I likely would have decided what you did. Although, with my swallowing phobia, I honestly don't know.
