I found something I absolutely HATE!

Gee that's something I never heard of, not having a Maytag. My machine is about 10 years old and a top loader. Are most top loaders being made now like your Maytag?
 

It sounds like to me it's a problem with the washer....I believe that I'd also go with an appliance guy rather than a plumber.
 

I'm not a fan of a front loader either. With a top loader you can let the clothes soak. That's a good way of getting the clothes cleaner.

With the front loader, it just doesn't seem to rinse the clothes as well. The idea behind the front loader is saving money on water.

But that's at the expense of a good rinse.

Re stinky water and smell. Well you should always leave the door open on a front loader so that it dries out properly, otherwise mold builds up inside. A rinse with chlorine would help or there are cleaners on the market now. It's a problem with front loaders.

But an overall smell of sewage. It's a drain problem. What you are smelling is the sewage gas coming back from the floor drain. It's possible your drain is not vented properly or the roof exit is full of leaves or something. That's the idea of a drain. A plumber could help with that problem.

Agreed. I always leave the door open. Inside the door is cleaned so it’s not a matter of our washer not being clean; it seems to be that the water is sitting in the pipes and not getting drained. If we don’t turn the water OFF after every wash then this stinky water seeps into the washer. This problem in itself speaks volumes but it’s beyond the knowledge of either my husband or I but I can’t do this any more. Just the thought of my clothes not being washed properly I’m now becoming paranoid .

As Hollydolly said, top loaders were common in the UK in the 60s & 70s, but are virtually unknown here now - or in Europe.

We have a fantastic front loader made by Meile. It does a great job, and you can pre-soak if you want. We have the washing machine installed in the airing cupboard (Hot press as we knew them) and a drier, which we rarely use, in the utility room. Also have a 'pulley' in the utility room.
 
This is interesting. I've always had top loaders. But certain family members have front. They've never mentioned problems and always look clean. This thread has made me glad of my top loader. :sentimental:
 
I’m making an appointment with an appliance service person to have a look at it.
The only setting I can trust is the sanitary cycle but it uses hot water and the cycle is 1:55 minutes which is just short if 2 hours but at least it cleans it.
 
We've had a top-loading Kenmore washing machine that came with the house 29 years ago, and is still working fine and cleans well. The dryer though, had to be replaced once. I think a lot of it is luck.
 
We had a great top loader that we purchased when buying the house and it didn’t last all the long. We discovered that we were destroying our appliances by not having a water softener. The hard water would cause so much build up that it ruin them. What I would do to get my kenmote top loader back?
 
Gosh Keesha, the whole machine- not knowing the workings, but there are products that remove mineral buildup like lime, calcium, rust etc.

CLR or Lime-Away come to mind. Also vinegar and baking soda, but how to apply or how much for a washing machine, I dunno.
 
Oh we used those in all our machine and our kettles. The thing is that it took us a while to realize that it was the hardwater doing the damage. Our washer just stopped working one day and we figured it was because of the corrosion caused by the water minerals but much later on. We aren’t that smart RaddishRose. We wondered why our first dishwasher didn’t last long either. We’ve since had a water softener installed and it makes the world of difference. We had our water professionally tested and it apparently was harder than the water in Lake Ontario. It’s no wonder it was killing our appliances. It’s really hard on the hair too.

No WE were years behind.:eek:nthego: We felt pretty stupid once we discovered the problem cause appliances are expensive.
The only calcium buildup problem we understood was in the tea kettle but that’s cause we could see it. At the time we didn’t connect the dots. We’re a bit slow. Lol
 
For me it's the front load dryer..........ya open the darn door, and it is right at knee level. Then ya need to somehow bend down, being that much farther away, and reach the clothes way in the back.....grrrr !

Since arthritis, I have been sitting on a chair to reach in....much easier, but damn it makes me feel even older....:(

But you can get stands for those front load dryers which puts them at the exact height you need so you aren’t bending down like that.

Both our appliances are Maytag front loadeds and we got both of them with the stands. It’s well worth the exact cost.
Measure your appliance and get a stand rpg. You’ll be happy you did.

When I first got it, I thought there was something wrong with it. They sent a completely clueless young guy, maybe on his first run, who sat on the floor in front of the machine texting to somebody for advice, presumably, who knows what he was texting about? After several hours, he left, saying he couldn't find anything wrong with it. It comes with a very brief manual, which never even mentions that.

Also, you can't adjust the water level at all, it "senses" the level, which always seems to be around 3 inches. And there is no dial telling you where you are in the cycle, for either the washer or dryer. (This is a stackable unit, so I'm stuck with both.) It does a pretty crummy job of getting the clothes clean.

Well thank you. I’ve discussed this topic at length with some others who have had similar problems.
Ive called an appliance repair place and made an appointment for it to be looked at. If it’s fixed and I still have problems with it then it’s getting sold and replaced. I miss my Kenmore. Isn’t Kenmore Sears generic brand ? If Sears is no longer around then won’t Kenmore become extinct?

Good suggestion for sure but......The laundry room situation/dimensions prevent that. I'd need to take out shelves , relocate/rearrange them etc.

But I'd need to hire it all out, my bones won't do that sort of thing any longer. For now,....I'll use the chair [only need it to remove the dried clothes] And I'm thinking about a new pair of machines?? They are 17 years old....so it might be something to consider in the next few years. Or...if either fails.

Yes, the age thing. I sometimes forget that most of you are much older than I am.
You have a good point also and only you would know that answer.

Keesha--yes, Kenmore is a Sears brand. But Kenmores are made by several manufacturers... Whirlpool, Frigidaire, LG, etc. There is no Kenmore factory, just a Kenmore brand.
