This is a worrying development and a turn around

Western education used to be superior to Asian schooling in that our education was less rigid, less rule bound and more encouraging of independent thinking. This made our populations more adaptable and better problem solvers in unexpected situations. I know that Australian engineers, nurses etc were highly regarded overseas precisely for their ability to quickly assess a situation and make decisions and to problem solve.

Now Asian students are demonstrating their superiority in problem solving and this means that we had better get our act together quickly.

THe level of US education has been going down for years and obviously there is no one in the US bright enough to fix it.

When you 'dumb down' the education system to suit all, there will be a lowering of standards. It has happened.

My grandaughter still gets an F in algebra,geomatry at her high school.
Half the girls at that school also failed.
The problem with the teachers today "everybody at their computers today to study the fundamentals of graphs and when you're finish we'll have a test".
In other words no personal touch by the teacher with math problems,the answers are on the computer.

Two words that all teachers should have tattooed onto the back of their right hands are "Teaching Matters".
People teach much better than text books and computers.

It helps if the human has a love of the material being taught.
