The Royals in Australia

Can't help but see the media people falling all over themselves to talk drivel about the Royal visit.
Not one of them had told me yet why they are here. There doesn't seem to be any major reason that I can identify.
Ten days is a relatively long visit these days.

Hardly. I don't think Australia rates very much with the Royal Family. Anyway, they don't invite themselves for a tour.
They would have been invited to come by an Australian government, but which one, and for what reason?

It's not uncommon for a PM having popularity problems to invite a royal visit just before calling an election.
Perhaps the double dissolution is coming sooner than we thought.

I don`t think they really don`t have to have a reason to be here it is part of the world tour which someone usually from the family
does the duty to one of the Commonwealth Nations the Queen is head of ... she was here herself in 2011 when PM Julia Gillard was at the helm.. I love seeing them here but sadly can`t walk far enough to go see them.. so being on television is wonderful
but I haven`t sat down watching them only on the news.. its nice to see the support for the young couple and their son..

You're not alone even we in the the UK have no idea why they are down under....although we're getting the footage in the media for breakfast dinner and tea...and everything in between. Before long at this rate some pap will photgraph them on the loo and we'll be served that up while we're watching the news at dinner time.. ;)

Fab couple tho', very in touch with the people unlike their granny (who is lovely), but I suspect because the Queen is now of an age where she can't travel great distances she's got the young ones introducing themselves to the rest of the Commonwealth for when it comes to their turn to be in the hot seats!

And at great expense to the Australians, that money could be put to better use i feel, don't get me wrong it's nice to see them but at what cost.

You're probably right, Hollydolly. It could be a training exercise.

Actually I have never given it a thought as to why they visited New Zealand and now Australia, it really doesn't make any difference to me where they visit.

It's not so much why they visit, Bea, but the timing is usually exploited by governments in power.
It is the same with visits by the US President.
This time around I can see no particular historic occasion that warrants the presence of the Crown, nor is there any imminent election.

Actually, the Australian, and I presume the New Zealand, people welcome royal visits because there is still a lot of affection for the Royal Family in the populace.
