There have been some "hints" over the years about the risks involved with drinking "diet soda" or using Artificial Sweeteners. Now, some long term studies are beginning to emerge, and the news is Not good. Here is the latest, and perhaps best, to date.....

I'm sure Coke and Pepsi will mount a campaign in the near future to debunk this study, since these diet sodas represent 100's of millions of dollars profit every year. It is pretty well proven that these artificial sweeteners "trick" the brain into wanting More....hence. even more money to Coke and Pepsi, etc.

Personally, I like to keep some artificial sweetener on hand...especially those which contain Aspartame. I have found them to be a very effective means of eradicating ants around the yard....whenever I find another new "ant hill", I spread a couple packets of this junk on the mound, and within days, it is dormant.

So, if you are a fan of these beverages, you might want to consider other options...regular soda, fruit juice, coffee, tea. or just plain water...your heart may thank you.

Was never a big soda drinker, and always disliked anything with artificial sweeteners in it, even Stevia. My husband and I drink plain seltzer every day, no sugar, no salt, nothing but carbonated water. Also some juices, unsweetened and natural. Coffee every morning. Good tip about the ant control, providing the dog or cat don't go licking the stuff. :p

I enjoy an occasional diet drink, like a ginger ale or lemon lime itype, especially if I have a tickle in my throat, & use a packet of aspartame in my a.m. Coffee & occasionally in tea. I don't feel as though it "tricks" me at all. Just one more thing I enjoy in moderation. MODERATION.

Me too!

No diet stuff here since neuro specialist says it constricts blood vessels and with a history of brain aneurysms, I need mine open at all times. They say just watch portions and no artificial sweeteners.

No I don’t ever use artificial sweeteners. They are extremely bad for the human body. Aspartame is broken down into methanol which is then broken down into formaldehyde. This causes headaches and diarrhea for many.

Artificial sugar is also known to cause obesity and diabetes for many but it’s true that it does make a great ant killer.

It seems the heaviest people I know drink diet sodas all day.

I don't drink any soda diet or otherwise, but I use Stevia in my morning coffee. I've read it's natural and not harmful, but maybe I'll re-check that.

I don’t drink diet soda but did most of my adult life until about 10 years ago...now I just drink water and use a packet of stevia in my coffee in the morning...I’m not giving that up...at this point.

As for diet soda drinkers being fat I think that’s only true if they also eat a lot and then just think that drinking a diet soda will make them thinner.

I was never fat when I drank diet soda, because I also ate healthy.

Only time in my life I had to lose weight was when I quit smoking...gained 30 lbs but lost it.

I do always have to watch what I eat though.

In general I'm getting very tired of "food snobs" who act superior & go around with their nose in the air & put down other people because they do or don't eat certain things, or do or don't shop at certain places (e.g., the Whole Paycheck devotees).
Some might argue that one person's food preferences might, in the long run, make another's insurance rates go up, but I think that's pretty weak. IMO, people who go around acting superior about anything, even if it's only what they do or don't put in their coffees will never earn my respect.

As far as I know, Stevia is the most natural and not harmful when it comes to sweeteners. i tried it a long time ago and still didn't like the taste or aftertaste. I bought some Zevia soda for my sister when she visited, she has diabetes, and that to me tasted bad, even the ginger ale flavor.

I didn’t like the taste at first...was using Splenda but I got used to it and it’s fine...I only need it for my coffee.

I’ve never heard of such a term... “ food snobs.”
The only thing I know is people have their own preferences which is perfectly understandable.
Some people prefer artificial sugar. I certainly don’t think I’m a better person because my preference might be different than theirs but I suppose some people might. To each their own.

My parents never used sugar in their coffee, only milk. I think during the Depression sugar was either too expensive or hard to get. So I grew up not liking it in my coffee, I only use creamer, which isn't very healthy either....but real cream or half and half makes the coffee too cold too soon. Even in tea, I prefer honey over sugar.

My parents used milk (and sugar) in their coffee, so I got used to milk. Cream is very tasty but I prefer to save the fat for more pizza, dhUOuPYZcZvGXGxpJZZV.gif.

Methinks if we were to eliminate from our diets everything that's been linked to negative health effects at one time or another during our lifetimes we'd be reduced consuming to little more than ultrapurified distilled water and hydroponically grown organic grass.

What do you eat or drink that hasn't been labeled a health hazard over the past 60 or so years?

No soda pops here. Did as a kid and ended up with enough dental issues from that stuff.

Water is my main drink, good ole spring water.

Tad of stevia in morning coffee. 1 cup.

I saw this and know people with cardiovascular issues who drink diet soda regularly along with other things. They think since it's not alcohol or loaded with calories & sugar it's 'better' or safer than regular. Alcohol might be doing most of the damage but mixing diet soda much of which is caffeinated is not helping. They've have high bp, are at risk for strokes since they had at least one. I should note they've done more working out and consumed more diet soda for over a decade now and their cardiovascular status is still deteriorating. They haven't stopped drinking or using other stuff. After a certain point the damage is done.

Sometimes people confuse not as bad for with good or better for you. Not as bad compared to what.

I have heard the term "food snob" many times on TV.

I a little familiar with the study that says diet soda and/or soda in general makes you more hungry and causes you to eat more. Since I am on daily predsione, which makes you always hungry, hunger from diet soda doesn't affect me.

I have three aneurysms-two in the brain. There is a history of them in my family. I have never been told not to drink diet soda in regards to the aneurysms so I find it extremely interesting that someone else has. I have had TIA's and two very small strokes which are linked to my AFIB and one of my aneurysms-no links to diet soda.

I have been told to severly limit my diet soda intake due to a failing kidney which is failing because a family inherited disease. Probably due to the sodium content of soda. I drink mostly water. Sometimes with crystal light which isn't good for you either.

I don't drink diet soda to make me thin, that ship sailed when I was born, lol. Fat baby, fat kid, fat teenager, fat young adult, fat short old lady. I drink diet soda since I have to limit my sugar.

RadishRose,

I was replying to what two other people said, on this discussion, in reference to the words "food snob".

I'm not a food snob by any means but did a lot of damage with soda pops in my early life...so I know better not to touch the cwap....good clean quality water does a body good......

Even when feeling a slump, take a good long gulp.

I cringe when I'm at a grocery check out and people in front of me or behind are buying cases of that cwap....
