My husband and I mostly eat off paper plates and use a lot of plastic silverware. What do you use?

There are only two of us so we stick to paper and plastic. I don't use a dishwasher, but hand wash. Still, it is a waste of water. Cereal bowls are about the only thing he uses that is non paper. I use a red cup for my cereal when I have it.

I use regular dishes, glasses, silverware, etc...

I've always hated spending money on things that are intended to be thrown away so I try to limit my purchase of disposables to toilet paper, paper towels and coffee filters, etc...

I don't mind washing dishes and do them several times a day by hand.

I'm trying very hard not to become one of the old fogeys that I've known over the years who have one slightly green coffee mug and one spoon in the dish drainer that they use for everything.:):playful::eek:nthego:

We use regular plates and utensils, but always use paper plates (buy them at Costco) when we can, for sandwiches, cake, rolls, anything that doesn't demand a regular plate or bowl. I hate to use plastic utensils, won't even use them when camping, too weak and a hassle to use. I never like dishwashers and don't have one, I prefer to hand wash, but with just the two of us it's not that much to take care of.

So many people eat off of paper lates now-at least judging from the pics I see on FB they do. Why? Washing a plate takes almost no effort at all,and if I`m gonna spend the time to shop for and cook a good meal,we`re gonna eat off of "real" plates, gosh darn it! LOL

We use ceramic dishes, silverware, real glasses. Hardly any paper ever. I run the dishwasher once a day. Paper plates have their place, but I prefer the real thing.

Just the two of us & we use ceramic plates, cups, saucers & bowls. Glass for drinking and a variety of glass bowls for mixing different food needs. Use dishwasher once a day to keep from wasting water. Live in the city so waste water is collected and reused. Don't use much in the way of paper or plastic. What little we do use is recycled.

Processing paper uses a lot of water, and wood pulp. Really try to minamise the use of plastic.

Reason

When plastics are sent to landfills and incinerators they don’t just disappear. The debris escapes onto roadways and the emissions are sent into the air we breathe. According to Keep America Beautiful, toxic pollution from plastics contributes over 19% of roadside waste. That’s like throwing 1,300 pieces of plastic trash on to every mile of roadway in the U.S.

Better to fill up a landfill than run out of water. I suppose it's which area of conservation that interest you most. Like everywhere else we have two trash cans-one to recycle plastic.

I have nice dishes and I set the table with them every day. Usually run the dishwasher once or twice a week. I don't want to waste trees on paper plates and we never use plasticware for obvious reasons.

Glass, so i can lick the plate, when sweetie is not looking. :hatlaugh1: When you have apple pie and ice cream, I can't just stop acting like a kid or a derelict...

if i was in charge, the world would recycle.

Only time I use paper plates is when there's a crowd.

Never use plastic silverware.

I can't say that when I was working and my children were small that I did the same.

You make an excellent point..

I use good quality melamine type plastic dishes, stainless steel silver ware & plastic drinking glasses. Unbreakable because I drop things a lot. Ceramic souvenir mug for coffee. The usual assortment of pots etc much downsized. Hand wash with vinyl gloves.

For everyday it's Corelle plates and bowls, stainless flatware, Corning drinking glasses ... and like Geezerette, we use ceramic souvenir mugs for tea and coffee.

Run the dishwasher when it gets full, but wash everything else daily. Water is a great renewable resource . . .except in the desert.

I just want to say that I am impressed that you even know you use corelle ware....

We always use real plates, silverware, cups and glasses. We don’t care to create more needless garbage.
The only time we use paper plates and cups is if we are going on a picnic or taking a meal up to my parents house.
We don’t use real dishes up there any more because their dishwasher doesn’t work so doesn’t clean their dishes and they are too old to notice or care . Plus it’s so much easier.

Its just me so I use a plate from my mother's set. I use a crystal glass for my milk. Ceramic coffee cup. Stainless steel silverware. It only takes a minute to wash up my dishes. I collect or used to Polish pottery and use a few of the pieces to eat my meals. Love the cereal bowl for oatmeal each day. My china is packed up but plan to get it out and use from now on when the kids come for meals. I am going to use my nice things and enjoy them from now on. Don't use the dishwasher much these days.

Hahaha. Got this in my email. Too funny not to pass on…
Larry went to visit his 86 year old grandfather in a very rural area. After spending a great evening chatting the night away, Larry’s grandfather prepared breakfast of bacon and eggs. Larry noticed a film like substance on his place, and questioned his grandfather asking, “Are these plates clean?”
His grandfather replied, “They’re as clean as cold water can get em. Just you go ahead and finish your meal”.
For lunch the old man made hamburgers. Again, Larry was concerned about the plates as it appeared to have tiny specks around the edge that looked like dried egg and asked, “Are you sure these plates are clean?”
Without looking up the old man said, “I told you before, those dishes are as clean as cold water can get them. Now don’t you worry, I don’t want to hear another word about it”.
Later that afternoon, as he was leaving, his grandfather’s dog started to growl, and wouldn’t let him pass. Larry yelled and said, “Grandfather, your dog won’t let me get to my car”.

Without diverting his attention from the football game he was watching on TV, the old man shouted, ‘COLDWATER, GO LAY DOWN NOW, YEH HERE ME!!!”
