My mother taught me at first, in a standard shift on the column. It was a '57 ford built like a tank. Gawd that thing was awful! At some point tho, standards just seemed to disappear here in the US, unless it was a sporty specialty car.

Sure. I taught my 2 kids. One in a car with a floor shift. Do they still have 'standard' transmissions?
