New Pope Robert Prevost from USA

They have made this so political from minute # 1 I'm shocked. I was born into the R.C. faith and the pope is only infallible on matters of the Catholic faith. I'm not saying any more because I no longer practice my faith but wish for peace in the world.

Well, that defied all the predictions I heard about how this conclave was going to be a long one owing to the number of Cardinals now involved. A guy from Chicago, where I was born. That surprises me. I'm used to Popes coming from other countries, and here is a guy from my back yard. He looks too young to be the Pope. Has the US ever produced a Pope before? He's from Chicago. Did I say that? I could have played with him. He's from Chicago.

Oh, I'm not knowledgable about the "Ratzinger brothers". Ask RadishRose? Post #10
He was basically conscripted into Hitler Youth: The Wiesenthal Center launched an investigation into Benedict's role in the Third Reich only to discover the Ratzingers came from a family of anti-Nazis, with no hint of antisemitism.

"The fact that he was in the Hitler youth -- if you were a young child during the Third Reich and you didn't go, you'd be condemned," said [Rabbi Marvin] Hier [of the Wiesenthal Center]. "He didn't volunteer. That's not a blemish. We've done a bunch of research, and that should be very clear."

Do you want to talk about the abuse within the Domsinger?

As I have stated previously, religious icons need to stay out of politics whether it’s good or bad for either Party. They all can have opinions, but by stating their position on political matters can only help to divide the country even more.

I can go back to the JFK days when the Pope at that time was giving praise to Kennedy. It almost cost him the election.

Kennedy won 303 to 219 in the Electoral College, and he won the reported national popular vote by 112,827, a margin of 0.17 percent. Fourteen unpledged electors from Mississippi and Alabama cast their votes for Senator Harry F. Byrd, as did a faithless elector from Oklahoma.

Right. His family was anti-nazi. He also deserted his German infantry post before the war ended.
My father had some interesting stories about the German prisoners he had interactions with at the end of WW2. He told me the regular soldiers were just glad the war was over and wanted to go home. Except for the SS. He had some choice curse words for them. These were your hard-core nazis.

Why does it always have to be some religious guy? I think it's time to put and end to all this discrimination and appoint an Atheist to the position.
I'm pretty sure that has already been done way back in the Middle Ages. The cardinals can elect someone who is not an ordained priest if they should choose to do so but that hasn't happened in modern times.

Some members on this board make rude jokes for things they dislike but won't state directly as though others won't notice their real attitudes.

there is much diversity and disagreement about appointing popes and the catholic church in general and a fairly preliminary google search will see you well on your way? I once took bread and grape juice with the Church of Christ - a more authentic name one could never find??

By the way, Pope Leo is not the first American pope! His predecessor Pope Francis was. Good choice on the part of the Cardinals.
No. When we Americans say America, we are referring to the United States. Not South or Central America. So Pope Leo XIV, is the first American pope in our minds and hearts.
