Could someone actually find out who I really am on this site

yes their IP address..not their home address !
It is not that difficult to track the IP and then work your way through to the user. There is so much info out there it is scary. It is a matter of your personal ethics and why you do it. Forum members? No reason to. Getting stalked by Indian dot recruiters - contact IT of the company whose IP they are using to get senior job applicants diverted.:>) Once you have a bread crum you can follow the trail which tends to disappear so be quick.

It has been my experience that over time, people leave enough clues to put two and two together.
Especially older people who no longer relocate frequently, and parents who post about their kids and reveal way more than intended.
exactly... I remember many years ago on a British forum, certain factions had got friendly who lived in the same town, which included several marrried couples... and gave out probably more personal info than they should.

There was a mssive falling out,.. and it ended with one guy going to another's home to attack him with a weapon, because he was convinced that the other guy was having an affair with his wife. These were people well in their 60's..at the time..

Police were called... ...however if they hadn't given out such personal info, then this couldn't have happened.

I'm concerned that uploading images directly from my computer to a forum could allow tech-savvy to gain access to my computer and all my files, so for images, I use an image hosting site or SNIPBOARD. I have read all sorts of technical information on this issue, and have yet to find a safety consensus.

the fact is it would be highly unlikely anyone could do that using your pictures... but you have to do what you feel is the safest for you.. and if that means using a hosting site, then so be it. I often use a hosting site, but not for those reasons..

When you post a local image the file is uploaded. There isn't any link to the source, and you'd have to have some form of file sharing service running locally and played some games on your router to allow a request through. Beyond that your computer would need to be running and they'd need your current IP address.

Somebody I met on another site swore up and down that Fb gave out her personal info. and another Fb member started harassing her by calling, emailing, etc. I've never used Fb so I don't know how likely that is.

It isn't a tale. Let's just agree to disagree on our facts, shall we? :)
Unless the laws have changed in the last few years, to use an IP address to get an exact address of the modem, you will need a warrant to get the suspect’s ip address in some instances, unless someone who already has it is willing to share it. After that, the LE Officer needs to subpoena the isp, (like aol or Yahoo or whoever is the internet provider) to get the home address. This usually takes time to get the info, but in cases of an emergency, most internet service providers will respond fairly quickly. Getting only the town or city is much easier.

The time factor comes into play when trying to access a person’s cellphone calls and especially text messages. Some cellphone providers take their time in some instances, but if LE uses an order from a Judge requesting to fast track the information, that can speed up getting the information. Best way to speed up getting the information is to have the phone in hand. Even if they remove the SIM card, a lot of information can still be pulled from the phone.

I didn't say the IP address can give someone the physical address. I think some misunderstood. What I said was essentially, a person might be able to be tracked down using an IP address. The tracker would start there. Along with other info given on a forum sometimes, the individual could be located.

Dynamic IPs change. Static IPs are assigned to a particular device and do not change.
Most IPs assigned by an ISP are dynamic, unless a customer requests a static IP. An ISP owns large "blocks" of IP addresses so the police would be able to match an IP to a particular ISP. Then the police can subpoena the network logs to pinpoint the subscriber in question.
VPNs and anonymous browsers like TOR make tracking more difficult, but not impossible, depends on how big a fish they gotta fry.

Facebook does not "give out" any personal information.
Facebook does not have "members".

That is on her for putting personal information on the internet, facebook or any other place.
If you don't want it know, don't choose to blast it to the world!

And be more selective of who you choose to be friends with and who you choose to see your facebook page.
My facebook page can only be seen by friends, and my facebook friends are relatives and in-real-life-friends... no random strangers at all.

That’s all true, Nathan, but with all of this new or maybe I should say newer technology, ISP’s are still able to gather information even using VPN’s, TOR, the dark web, etc., but the ISP may require a second warrant or subpoena.

These cheaters never quit.

So some things which I talk about here, or in the future that I intend to talk about, I'm worried that someone may become offended if they knew who I was and that I was talking about them. Can someone find out my actual name here, has it ever happened? Or is this a stupid question, as I guess as long as I'm online, anyone can find out who I am?
People only know you by the amount you tell them. If you give them too much personal information they might figure it out.

I'm not so sure about names and addresses, but I'm beginning to get the creeps from the number of ads that keep popping up, pitching products that I recently (today or yesterday) expressed the slightest interest in looking at.

My latest was coffee. Costco was advertising a promotion deal for Peet's keurig cups, and I wanted to compare their prices with Amazon's (they are also having a sale), so I googled both yesterday. Today I am being inundated with coffee. Not the real thing, unfortunately, just the ads.

This seems to be happening more and more often. This can be pretty embarrassing if you're comparing prices for items like, say, underwear.

Use Duckduckgo as a browser it'll stop anyone tracking you
