‘Old-Person Smell’ Really Exists, Scientists Say

Are you sure "FAT" doesn't have something to do with it?
I walked in the post office one day and smelled this AWFUL ole lady smell. Went around the corner and there were two
gray haired ladies but they were terribly overweight! Don't thin people smell better?

"(Reuters Health) – People can be so turned off by obese individuals that they actually imagine a bad smell, according to a new study.

Study participants who were shown images of heavy and thin individuals while sniffing odorless substances rated the “scent samples” as smelling worse when they were paired with images of heavy people.

“Our findings suggest that people may hold negative views of heavy individuals that are sufficiently entrenched that they can cross over into olfactory (that is, smell) perceptions though people may not be aware that they hold such views,” senior author Andrew Ward told Reuters Health in an email.

“This is the first study to show that negative bias toward heavy individuals is sufficient to affect smell perception,” said Ward, a psychology researcher at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania."

Health and diet also has to do with the way you smell.

What Do Your Body's Odors Say About Your Health? (excepts from the article below) > https://www.henryford.com/blog/2017/04/body-odors-health

"Whether your breath reeks or your feet stink, body odors can act as a powerful looking glass that reflects your health status. Generally, a simple shower or a swig of mouthwash can mitigate the stench. But select cases may require a more systematic approach, attacking the odor at the source. Some conditions and diseases even produce a signature aroma. How do you know if you have a problem?

“You start by identifying whether body odors are physiological,” explains Hina Syed, M.D., family medicine specialist at Henry Ford Health. “For instance, if you’re someone who sweats a lot and your sweat always smells a certain way, that’s normal. But if you notice a change in the smell or you’re sweating more than usual, that’s worth investigating.”

My ex is thin .. and, no matter what soap he used, when he started to perspire, he smelled skunky.
I bought him Irish Spring soap, and deodorants. None worked.

Thinking about grampa's smell;

I really liked it
Looking for words to describe it

Musty
somewhat old house smell
unventilated
maybe a bit of decay
an old hay bale comes to mind
Can't readily put my finger on it

He was fastidiously clean, however

Maybe just old....

An old poster of mine may explain it

Interesting - this topic about older people smelling differently than younger people.

I've experienced different smells coming from older people, and they were ok. The ones that weren't pretty....were the hidden farts that seeped into the room like a stealth weapon, striking when you least expected them! And sometimes they weren't so silent at that, which caused a chorus of giggles from me and my sisters. The worst ones happened in church, where you couldn't move as the stealth bomb trapped you in vapors of hell, until services ended two hours later, meanwhile your nose was twitching constantly, and your eyeballs were roving around, trying to figure out who it was.

I don't remember my Grandma's scent. I do remember that she wore lots of powder, so much so that it was even in her hairline. My Grandfather used to say to her, "you look like you dipped your head in a flour barrel". :ROFLMAO:

Sorry to get off topic.
