“Every choice I make should be life affirming”
This was part of a sentence in an article I read about general decision making, decision fatigue, executive functioning.
It stuck with me. Made me think, deeply, about the choices I make, big and small, in everyday life, and how very nuanced some of them are, how on the surface this or that choice doesn’t look particularly life affirming, but it actually is, viewed from a wider perspective and deeper inspection.
Yes, it’s a life affirming choice for me to walk 4-5 miles a day, to adhere to a heart healthy diet, to remove negative people from my life, to be debt free etc. All good choices, few would argue the positivity of them.
But sometimes…..sometimes it’s life affirming, in a different way, to NOT. Obviously I’m not talking about becoming a couch potato instead of my daily walks,
but what if Ron wants to cook me breakfast so we can sit together and have a leisurely meal instead? What if we really should put that chunk of money towards paying off the house, but instead we buy a side-by-side so we can enjoy that recreational activity together, and with family, while we’re still healthy and able?
Life affirmative decisions aren’t always black/white, either/or. Sometimes decisions that on the outside look reckless or irresponsible or sketchy, are actually positive affirmations of a balanced life well lived and enjoyed!
Food for thought.
