A 26-pound rabbit was rescued after it was found hopping along Highway 17 in Santa Cruz over the weekend, according to the California Highway Patrol and the Santa Cruz County animal shelter.

Construction crews saw the large animal near the Laurel Curve on Sunday shortly before 2 a.m. and called the CHP for help, according to highway patrol spokesperson Israel Murillo. Officers responded and transported the gray rabbit, dubbed “Bugs,” to Pacific and Santa Cruz Veterinary Specialists.

The animal is suspected to be a Flemish Giant rabbit, “which is very large, but not uncommon for breeds of domesticated rabbits,” said Amber Rowland, general manager of Santa Cruz County Animal Services.
