11 yr old shut down by health Dept.

Ah, the beloved red tape.....bet her Mum's kitchen is cleaner than a lot of restaurants!

Good point......could she give them away and charge for something else.....like a photo or something?

Considering that I'm usually anti-government about everything, I think they did the right thing in this case.

If they let HER sell them without licensing and certification, then that sets precedent for everyone else. It's not the kind of rule that you can allow exemptions just because the baker is a cute little kid - it's about public health.

I've often wondered how people can get away with selling home-made goods at church functions, flea markets and the like - probably just under the radar. This girl made the mistake of allowing herself to be "exposed" by the media.

My ex- used to make custom cakes and candies, even did some advertising, and I was always waiting for that knock on the door. I was relieved when she gave it up.

Over here you need to have the items on the church cake stall clearly labelled with all the ingredients, mostly for the sake of people with food allergies. There is no check on the cleanliness of the various kitchens in which they are made.

This happens a lot and, yes, even lemonade stands. Health Department be damned. I just think it's coldhearted cruelty aimed at sweet kids.
