18 Year Old Cat Went Missing Last Night

Normally my husband leaves his bedroom door open for the cat to get in with him.at night . The dogs sleep with me. Since not letting her in, she would just howl at night. It was pitiful.

Normally I get up extra early and she’d be crying for food. She didn’t the past two mornings. Yesterday I slept in really late and only saw her once outside walking around the veranda. Now I wished I’d knocked on the window or gone to see if she wanted in.

Last night we had a bad thunder and lightening storm. I think either a coyote got her or she went under the veranda to die. The thought that she didn’t think we loved her any more so ran off to die haunts me. 😭 She was a bit senile but I think she was trying to let us know she was dying.

I can’t process this and feel like such a neglectful cat owner. 😰

I hope that your cat shows up eventually @PeppermintPatty
She may just be hiding somewhere.

Don't beat yourself Patty, a neglectful cat owner would have just done a shoulder shrug and thought no more of it. You, on the other hand, love and care for your pets, you feel bereaved, understandable given that you love the cat so. Heartbreaking though it is, try to stay focused, I do hope that you find her, thinking of you.

Thank you for your comments of concern.

We found this cat on our property under some hostas in September 2005. Somebody had dropped her off at 6 weeks old and our German shepherd and other dog were barking at her , letting us know she was there. My husband said ‘Whatever you do, don’t feed her.’ After he left, I gave her some chicken.
The vet said if we hadn’t have found her, she wouldn’t have lived for much longer.

Since then, she’s been an inside/outside cat. She was outside from spring until late fall, often staying out all night hunting mice and stuff. Some of these offerings were brought as gifts to me at our back deck.

She’s really street wise and when I looked up about cats missing, it said that 87% of indoor/ outdoor find their way home. We looked on our cameras and discovered she’d walked out to our shed at 1:11 p.m. and it rained all day yesterday which then turned to a full out thunder and lightening storm.

Being that’s she’s 18, I was very concerned when she didn’t come back from the shed. We looked under the shed, around the garage and even behind our house on the trails but she was nowhere to be found.

Suddenly we both looked out back only to discover her sauntering back to the house. It was almost mid day. We figured she ran up a tree due to coyotes , fox , raccoons etc and it took her that long to find her way back down. At 18 she doesn’t move too fast but she impressed me still with her survival skills.

Her only big problem is that she gets lonely at night and cries out often. If you leave your door open she’ll keep you up all night.
Anyway, I can’t believe she came back. I thought she was gone for good but so glad to be wrong.

Oddly enough our neighbours came by to visit us claiming they lost both their cats last night. Cats hate thunder & lightening storms which is why I’m so surprised she went out to the shed. Maybe she came to the door so many times and nobody let her in that she took it upon herself to find suitable shelter.

Cats are incredibly surprising at times. They truly aren’t as dependent as dogs and are clearly more resourceful. I’m so impressed with her. Eighteen years old and she’s still got exceptional survival skills.

I ♥️ my cat.
Thanks for the support you guys.
Much appreciated.

She’s barely eating. She weighs 4 pounds even. She’s so scrawny her hips and bones stick out.

She isn’t eating much at all. She will sit on my lap but doesn’t like being fussed with for too long. She’ll walk away if it’s excessive.

It’s sad watching your beloved pets die.
This cat has outlived 3 dogs. She found me. We’ve had such a special bond.. I feel bad because I’ve always put the dogs ahead of her.

My husband says I’ve always got to feel bad or guilty about something. I’m always trying to designate blame to situations that are blameless.

She’s purposely wandering off under the shed to die. Why else would she suddenly start hanging out there. I firmly believe she was out there during the big rain storm and something chased her further away.

I’m going to see if we can bring her in to get euthanized . She looks in pain and I can’t bear that. 😥

I don't see any kind of link at the end of PP's post.

I had an outdoor cat (hated being inside) for many years and was never a "snuggle" type. But regardless, we considered her family and she was always around. I think she just liked being with people as long as you didn't try to pick her up or love on her too much.

Anyway, one day she wouldn't leave us alone, kept rubbing on us, and wanting to be petted. I thought it was really strange, but petted her as long she wanted until it was time to go in the house to start dinner. I said, bye, Kitty (that was her name), see you tomorrow, and never saw her again. I think she was saying goodbye to us. She certainly didn't seem sick to me at all, but something must have been going on with her. I feel bad for going in the house and leaving her but there was no way to know I'd never see her again.

I might be reading more into this than I should. She may have had an accident or something that night, and it was just a coincidence, but it was strange that she acted so friendly that day. It was very unlike her.

This is my 3 time trying. I keep losing my post. I’m going to write this in my notes just in case I lose it again.

No you are not reading more to this.
Our pets know when they are going to die. They are far more in touch with their 6th sense than we are. Some of my past pets have contacted me through my dreams to let me know they are going to die and take the time to let me know how much they loved me and wanted to say goodbye.

Once she started going under the shed I knew something was up. She never went over on that side of the property. She always stuck around the house- walking around the veranda or sitting on the steps.

She was a very affectionate cat but she had to compete with 2 dogs who always wanted my attention and she’d sneak in time with me when she knew they weren’t around. It was our special time together.

When she left during that storm I cried so much cause I never got to say goodbye. I need to share that goodbye. When she came back , it was like she came back to say goodbye. She was extra close and extra affectionate, I got that one unforgettable moment where I pet her gently and told her how much we all loved her. I made such a fuss and in my heart ,I felt like she knew it.

She slept on my arms last night for hours. She purred but ever so gently. I shared a bit of turkey, a bit of cream cheese and a bit of ice cream with her. I don’t think she actually really wanted it , but it was a precious bonding moment which we both cherished.

This bottom picture was when we were putting our ceramics down and having some landscaping done. These two were watching together. IMG_5830.jpeg

I had a horrible night so got up late. I missed our morning time but she cried and cried to get outside and I didn’t want to let her out but she wouldn’t stop crying. My husband let her out saying it was a sin to keep her in.

I know in my very heart and soul that our cat came by to say goodbye.
I’m torn inside feeling guilty that we didn’t know enough to have her put down but my husband says that maybe she didn’t want that.

I’ve got to remind myself that cats aren’t as domesticated as dogs so it might be more natural for them to want to just wander away in the night and die.

She really disliked being crated in the car and the only time we did that was when we moved here and she was such a good sport about it. She understood perfectly that we were moving.

Even her last week she seemed to have done all the things she wanted to do before leaving this earth. She played with the dogs, she went out many times to lie on the veranda while it rained. She got fussed with by both of us. We heard her purr. We saw her play. The only thing I didn’t see her do is wash herself. That wasn’t like her but this cat had a fabulous life and I will miss her so. ♥️
