24 hours is a long time in politics

In NSW we have a standing corruption commission (ICAC) which has the power to call witnesses at the very highest level. Lying to ICAC is punishable with gaol sentences.

Another reason not to lie is that when you are being questioned you do not know what evidence from other witnesses has already been gathered.

Yesterday ICAC, while investigating corruption in a privately owned company that was connected with certain members of state parliament and the current federal Assistant Minister to the Treasurer, questioned the NSW Premier about a bottle of 1959 Grange Hermitage, value just under $3,000. The Premier denied that he had received such a lavish gift from one of the men under investigation who was lobbying members of the government for a lucrative deal which would have secretively enriched the families of certain parliamentarians. He said he had not entered the gift on his register of gifts because it never happened.

Today he has resigned as premier after his thank you note for the bottle was produced in his own handwriting. He still says that he has no recollection of the wine or the thank you note but he has fallen on his sword and handed over the leadership of his party, and hence the premiership. Talk about rooster today, feather duster tomorrow.

All this happening just as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and baby Prince George are about to touch down in Sydney for a 10 day visit.

How embarrassment!!

We shouldn't really be surprised. NSW has been plagued by corruption since the earliest days of settlement.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose; ain't that the truth?

Prince George is a real cutie, so like his Daddy at the same age.:) I suspect their visit will deflect people's minds from politics for a while!

It certainly will. Royal fever has broken out big time in the media.

Murdoch's newspapers will bury the Premier's difficulties well back from the front page.
I feel a bit sorry for the Premier but it looks like there is more to emerge yet about corruption in high places.

The whole lot of them are corrupted, be nice to be able to kick them out and start anew, but alas this can't be done. I can't get over how he stood there blatantly lying that he knew nothing about the bottle , yet he had written a thankyou note :lies:

You don't really forget a gift of vintage Grange Hermitage, especially when the vintage is your birth year.
You wouldn't just store it in the garage either.

More significantly, he claimed that he didn't really know Nick Di Girolomo when it is apparent that he did have quite a bit of contact with him. So did Sinodinos. The corruption that surrounds Australian Water Holdings has reached deep into both the Labor and Liberal parties.

He better be cute if he wants to share in the
value of Britain’s Royal Family as a brand.

70 BILLION BUCKS

Most of the Royals, especially the Queen, work very hard indeed. I certainly wouldn't enjoy being them, that is for sure.

I wouldn't want to be a celebrity of any kind.
It must be hell on earth to be under scrutiny every moment of the day.
I'm not surprised that some of them have become reclusive in later life.

I'm very happy to be common and ordinary.
