That's a great idea, really. From the pedestrian's perspective it would look flat - the illusion wouldn't trick their eyes. If drivers would get to a point where the trick doesn't work, it'd be because they don't care. Which they don't. All over southeast Asia pedestrians aren't given the right-of-way....they're given about 2 seconds to get the hell out of the way.
