"A suspect is on the run after at least three people were killed and two others were injured in a shooting at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville on Sunday night, authorities said.

In a statement sent to the university's community early Monday and subsequently shared with ABC News by school officials, University of Virginia President Jim Ryan identified the suspect as student Christopher Darnell Jones, Jr. The University of Virginia Police Department also named Jones as the suspect at large via Twitter."

Here in Canada, Universities don't HAVE Police departments. The regular municipal Police handle calls for service there. JimB.

This took about 30 seconds on Google. From wikipedia:

The University of Toronto Campus Safety Division, formerly named the University of Toronto Campus Police, was created in 1904 as the university's campus police force. The University of Toronto Campus Safety division has jurisdiction over 80,000 students, faculty and staff, in addition to the thousands of visitors to the University each day.

The division is commanded by three Police (Special Constable) managers assigned to each campus (St. George, Scarborough and Mississauga-Erindale). Several platoons have been organized which consist of Staff Sergeants, Corporals and Constables. These platoons of officers provide policing services to the University around the clock, 365 days per year. Each platoon consists of specialized officers who are trained in general and advanced patrol functions. In addition, officers are also trained in advanced criminal investigation functions, including SOCO (scene of crime officer). Campus Safety SOCO officers will examine crime scenes for trace evidence and submit their findings to Toronto Police Forensic Identification Unit.

This really is an awful situation. The victims are apparently members of the UVA football team. The suspect has been captured btw.

Sad, sad, sad...

That would probably make more sense. I suspect the reasons a lot of ours have their own police is a combination of wanting control and taxes.

Most Universities here pay little tax to support local governments and police forces. Particularly in smaller towns asking the local police to support the University is a big burden.

By 'coincidence' 4 Idaho students found dead in a home near the University of Idaho.

Limited details at this time.

It's bad enough I hope there isn't some kind of social media challenge or something

Too young

The UVA shooting has to do with an ex-member of the football team opening fire on the team bus. Doesn't sound like a social media challenge. I haven't seen much news on the Idaho killings.

Apparently reports having the suspect waiting for them to return from a trip. Ex and current football players there's a beef there. If he played 4 years ago what would his contact with the current team be.

If you had read a little more, you would have found that the U of T security guards are unarmed, and have no Police powers. They are simply security guards, and in about 90 percent of the situations they respond to, they simply call Toronto Police Services to come and handle the problem. JimB.

What you said was that Canadian universities don't HAVE police departments. That's simply not true. They are not called police departments, but they serve the same function.

Also from wikipedia:

Canada[edit]

Campus police in Canada are sworn in as peace officers – giving them full police powers on their respective campuses to enforce the Criminal Code, as well as local bylaws. Peace officers in Canada do not typically carry firearms like their police counterparts, so campus officers only carry a baton, pepper spray, handcuffs and a radio. Protective vests, similar to those of police, are worn. Notable examples of campus peace officer services include the University of Toronto Campus Safety Division, McMaster University Security Service, UBC Campus Security and the University of Alberta Protective Services.

In Ontario, the term of 'campus police' is prohibited under Bill 68 of the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019.[1] If anyone other than a police service, including a peace officer service, wishes to address themselves as 'police', they must seek exemption from the province.[2]

Sorry JimB but I get tired of the "we do it better in Canada" posts.
