Ah, 50 years ago my wife and I were newlyweds and looking forward to moving into our first house in the spring!

Mash started in 1972 and was about the Korean War. At the same time 1000's of kids my age, in the U.S. were being drafted to go to Viet Nam. Somehow the 2 coming together seems like war makes for entertainment all around. I loved M.A.S.H.. Watched it religiously.

I don't think kids were being drafted in 1972 for Vietnam as we were winding down and returning home. the official stand is that all ground combat forces were out of the country by 1973.

The last draft call was on December 7, 1972, and the authority to induct expired on June 30, 1973.

World War II sitcoms were plentiful. MacHale's Navy, Hogan's Heros, Combat, Gomer Pyle, etc...

Fifty years ago,1972, I was at Vietnam on the aircraft carrier USS Hancock CVA19, the Fighting Hanna along with the Kitty Hawk and the Ticonderoga. We patrolled up and down the Vietnam coast and would bring in holy hell to support the US Marines and US Solders that were still in Vietnam helping the south Vietnamese. I was in Vietnam 1969- 1970 in the Army and at Vietnam 1972-1973-and 1974 in the Navy. There were still solders still inland and we would send in hell and high water to support them.

One of our TV channels still broadcasts reruns of MASH, and I still watch a show occasionally....it brings back some memories of the year I spent in Thailand....USAF/1967, when that Vietnam mess was in full swing.

My time on the Hancock was in the mid sixties. Three cruises to Vietnam and the South China Sea, Yankee and Dixie Station - all in the engine rooms. Ashore in Olongapo and several stops in Hong Kong and Japan, but I doubt I ever saw Vietnam - maybe once, but probably just a cloud on the horizon. Extended my Navy enlistment for two years in exchange for two years shore duty. The old saying Join The Navy And See The World had real meaning for me. Lots of Asia, Europe from Norway to Greece, Turkey, and many visits to Gibraltar and Morocco.
