81 year old woman jumps to her death in front of wedding guests

A little bit of grass wouldn't save you if you jumped from a high height... that's for sure !
Forty years ago, a young woman jumped out her 4th Floor window, me & my little son actually saw the whole thing, and under her window was grass and she only broke her hip or something. She was a neighbor's daughter on my floor; clinically insane, btw. I felt she wasn't really serious.

Funny, I forgot this bizarre story until now.

I don't know yet. This is one of my suicide options. I would go to my roof, taking care I was above concrete, not grass, as my bldg. is mostly surrounded by lawn.
I think it's pretty well established this woman did a horrific thing. So to get a little off topic I am asking Pepper.

Does that plan include being naked ?

I think she was very lucky, and maybe would have survived on concrete.... some people do.... you try falling from a height on grass ( unless it's very thick and high)..I can bet you you're more likely to die....

This young woman's older sister years later told me she walked into the East River one cold day and drowned herself. She accomplished her mission.
you can't stop anyone who is determined. Some people will be saved on their first try, and really it's a cry for help, but people who have completely given up on life, can stand not another minute more... will go on until they achieve their goal.

Two suicides in my immediate family tells me this without a shadow of a doubt...

People jump from high buildings or step in front of trains because they know it will be a successful. Pills (and even pistols) often are not.

Most aren't thinking about the ghastly repercussions for the conductor, passengers, passersby or cleanup crews because they can't see past their own pain. Even a hanging, while a relatively "clean" suicide, must nevertheless be extremely gruesome.

I can assure you the hanging which is what my ex husband's son did..locally.. from a tree ( fortunately not in his home where his wife and baby were )... apparently was a very unpleasant sight...

I believe that sometimes a mention of it being "selfish" is perhaps about the way it's done and not necessarily the act itself. The same end result would be achieved quietly at home or out in nature somewhere... why choose a wedding ... and also with dozens of people on the street witnessing? Why scar hundreds of people most probably including children when you could have chosen your bedroom or the back yard? I do think that may be where the "selfish" often comes in. Thoughts?

I have mostly seen the word "selfish" used in relation to suicide as referring to the person having no thoughts for the survivors and how they will be affected. However, a person who is at the point of suicide is in so much psychic pain they are not capable of thinking anything beyond the desire to end that pain. They simply want that pain to stop. They are beyond the point of thinking rationally, of thoughtfully considering how shattered their families and friends will be if the suicide is completed. I get frustrated when suicidal people are slammed as selfish; for one thing, that exhibits a total lack of the compassion that they clearly badly needed.

I do agree with what others have already stated: that people who kill themselves should not do so in a way that involves others, such as by jumping in front of a train. That only compounds what is already a terrible tragedy. (Well, ideally a person would not die by suicide at all.)

I don't understand the connection between the wedding and the suicide. It doesn't say the church was right next door or across the street, so what did that have to do with her jumping out of the window or off the roof?

I just looked it up on Street View... the church is directly opposite the aparments..in fact so close if you threw a stone from an upper apartment it could very easily land in the church grounds...
