A block option is much needed!

Surely when anyone responds to a thread, any thread, they are telling us more about themselves, including the unpleasant aspects. This is of interest to all of us and allows us to decide whether or not to inter-act with that person in the future. Therefore all responses should not be interfered with.

Rindee, the only possibility would be that you create your own forum. You are the owner and admin and can delete not even comments but the whole thread and even the account of all members.

I was a member of a medical forum for some years and had written maybe about a thousand comments. The owner I even had visited already, suddenly got angry with me and deleted my account and all comments. Then the problem was that the threads were inconsistent. You could read answers but there was no question and so on.

If a thread starter could delete comments of other members he/she didn't like in his/her own thread, the forum soon would look moth-eaten.

And btw this is a discussion forum, which needs controversial comments.

What does "ignore" do? And, if I decided to ignore someone how would I do so? If I put someone on ignore, do they know they are being ignored?

The thing with ignore though @Richie is that sometimes it is the posters who you might choose to ignore who, in the end, are the ones who provide the most amusement. :)
And there is another problem. You must be logged in. If you are not logged in, you see all the comments of members you have ignored. Often it happens that I don't log in to read only the new comments. Sometimes I find a comment of an ignored member interesting and like to answer. But if I log in to answer, all comments of this person have vanished :ROFLMAO:

Yes.

I've seen something similar to that.

however you can read it when logged in, if you ''unignore'' the person

I'm much too nosy genuinely curious to block anyone... 'fraid I may miss something hilarious. Case in point....

I am seeking to improve this site, and I hope someone considers it. I want more control over my forum threads, to block people I deem offensive, or, if I just don't like them, I should have that option to keep them from posting on it. And the term is "If it works, don't fix it." An old Irish proverb.

What you are asking is called censorship where you control what people read. 1984

I thought I was going to learn something but try as I might I can't find the origin of your quote.

Do you have a reference that I can read?

When it comes to your suggestion for a thread op to be able to block an opinion. Isn't that counter productive to having a variety of opinion input?

if I am not mistaken every participant here is an adult, although I for one can be childlike with my petty arguments opposing free speech. Perhaps by installing an algorithm into the system we can eliminate controversy altogether by simply having a list of squeaky clean topics and responses suitable for all ages.

Seriously folks, grow up.

If I put someone on ignore, do they know they are being ignored?
Well in theory, no.

But have you seen those submarine battle movies where in murky, dark waters they use SONAR pings and deft listening and analysis to locate obstacles and enemy ships?

Well, for "headphones" we have response posts and "likes." For pings we can use posts of our own, then observe any reactions.

It doesn't provide 20-20 vision, but we aren't completely blind and deaf to who is Ignoring us.
