A Boring Read..

If a book doesn't have me by the second chapter I stop reading it.

Right now I need to read the DMV manual because I have to take the written test in order to renew my license. I guess cause I'm old?? I have a perfect driving record. I haven't read it yet but I can tell by the cover it's going to be as boring as heck!

Ahhhhhhhh!!!!! Every year, when I was in school, we were assigned summer reading. And every year, I was assigned "Two Years Before The Mast", by Dana. It was written in 1840. And in my opinion, should have been burnt right away. I can't tell you how many times I read that first page. I just loved those 300 word sentences. By page 2, I was praying for a ship wreck. Never got beyong page 2.

Here's an example: And there lay, floating in the ocean, several miles off, an immense, irregular mass, its top and points covered with snow, and its centre of a deep indigo color…. As far as the eye could reach, the sea in every direction was of a deep blue color, the waves running high and fresh, and sparkling in the light, and in the midst lay this immense mountain-island, its cavities and valleys thrown into deep shade, and its points and pinnacles glittering in the sun….But no description can give any idea of the strangeness, splendor, and, really, the sublimity, of the sight. Its great size… its slow motion, as its base rose and sank in the water, and its high points nodded against the clouds; the dashing of the waves upon it, which, breaking high with foam, lined its base with a white crust; and the thundering sound of the cracking of the mass, and the breaking and tumbling down of huge pieces; together with its nearness and approach, which added a slight element of fear,—all combined to give to it the character of true sublimity.

It's funny, I've been driving for 53 years with only one small accident (and a few near misses), and I'm still afraid to take the written test and horrified of having to take the driving test in 3 years from now when I turn 80.

Written test in CA? ...WOW ! ... I only have to worry about passing the eye chart test when I renew next year. They make us renew every 4 years over age 70 (I think that's the age anyway .. not really sure.)

We LOVE pictures. Maybe even a button with a recording on how to do it.

Better yet, a person who pops up and gets it all set up for us!

WHat i most dislike to read, are all of those "Important notices of changes" regarding policies or cards you have had for many years, and have tried to read many prior notices..... and now, there are always more changes to those changes .... o_O

I blerry hate romantic fiction...*ugh*....

But Holly, it is the MOST and only, happy thrilling moment of their whole lives, that they have spent their entire lives just "waiting" for.
And they are usually between about 18 and 28 whole years old. :ROFLMAO:

No offense intended to anyone who enjoys them! Those stories are sometimes the better choice to the violent stories, imho. :)

Yes,written test at age 70-or at your next renewal after 70. But they are very lenient if you fail. I don`t know how he knew this, but my husband told me:cool: But then it is good for 5 years.

FEMA Manuals! I was happy working as a volunteer with the Red Cross until FEMA got into the act and decided that we should all complete a bunch of training courses they had "developed", surely with the help and guidance of a host of very boring Government Bureaucrats. After the first one, I quit after deciding that there was no valid reason for letting myself be tortured.

I'm happy to know I will have 5 years breathing space after this Mrs. Robinson. John has to pass his in Dec and I am due in Jan so I imagine we'll go down at the same time and face the music. I hope he passes the eye test. He's diabetic but I think he'll pass ok. I have got to man up ("woman up"?) and start reading that darn booklet!!!
