A Bowl of Cereal at Night?

I can remember as a child my sister and I spent a week with our grandparents. For breakfast my grandmother gave us a bowl of Grape Nut. I loved it and have even searched the internet for where I can get it. They say it is available only in America, not anywhere in Australia. Has anyone here ever tasted it or bought it?
It's common here in the US and I hate it. Would that I could send it all to Australia but I guess other Americans would beg to differ with me since it seems to keep on selling.

I prefer cold cereal later in the day. I'm more hot cereal for breakfast. For a quick dinner or later snack, I say yes.

I buy the off brands like Barbara's, Cascadian Farms and Enviro Kidz. I have to find on sale. They have got pricey.

My mom used to buy it and I poured a pile of sugar on the mound of cereal. Kind of defeated the purpose I guess.

That commercial takes me back but false advertising. There is nothing grapes or nuts (both yummy) about that cereal. Pine needles I might beleive. Dude should have been embarassed to say that but they were paying him so much I guess it didn't.

I've always liked Grape Nuts and keep it in the house. I'm more apt to eat them for dinner than breakfast and will do so once a month or so. Splash on some almond milk, stir in a teaspoon of sugar, and warm it in the MW for a minute or so to soften. Sometimes I make it using a combo of GNs and unsweetened spoon size shredded wheat.

I also always have (store brand) Cheerios around in the house and sometimes grab a handful for a quick snack.

Breakfast is my main meal, then a light lunch and light dinner that's closer to a snack than a meal.

I'm not much of a cereal lover. but I do eat a few kinds for breakfast once a week. I've never thought of having it for dinner, though. I'm kind of traditional when it comes to food.

The cereals I like are Cracklin' Oat Bran, and two of the Trader Joe granolas: Honeycrisp apple and the maple flavored one. They are good enough to be considered snacks, and are particularly delicious with milk and fruit.

But I don't eat that many of them.

A bowl of cereal in milk is way higher in sugar and carbs etc, than a few small crackers and a few little squares of cheese.

well, sure - portion size matters in both. As it would in anything.

I dont think the 'few small' and 'few little' was mentioned before

I think it kinda stands to reason that when people have cereal and milk they usually have a whole bowl of it, which normally constitutes a good bit more food volume than a few crackers and a few little squares of cheese.

And again, most cereals have added sugar along with the naturally occuring sugar (lactose) in the milk.

All in all, not a healthy snack any time of day, but particularly not right before bed.

I wouldn't say most cereals have added sugar. Not much in weetbix.

I think it is a perfectly OK snack or small meal - and no different whether you have it at breakfast or before bed.

But you do whatever suits you.

percentage of cereal brands with added sugar - Google Search

nobody denied there are cereals with added sugar - there are plenty without too. and obviously the amount varies

the vitabrits I eat for breakfast have 1% sugar, just checked the nutrition label on the box - I know weetbix are about the same. Lots of children and adults here eat them - very common breakfast cereal

I doubt there is much less that that in your crackers - but I cant be bothered searching and copying and pasting an article to say so

Of course ,as well as portion size, people ca n choose different cereals - and how much sugar is in them and what size portion they eat will matter to some people and not others.

But you do whatever suits you and enjoy the view from your high horse.

One cup of Cheerios with 1/2 cup of whole milk: 169 calories, 25.3g carbohydrate (60%), 5.7g fat (30%), 7.3g protein (17%).

5 Nabisco saltine crackers and one ounce of Monterey Jack cheese: 180 calories, 12g carbohydrate (27%), 10.5g fat (52%), 8g protein (18%).

Both are relatively healthy low calorie snacks. Almost identical in total calories and protein. The crackers and cheese option has no added sugar but is fat-heavy and contains no fiber. Cheerios and milk has a near perfect macro nutrient balance, contains one gram (4 calories) of added sugar, and 3g of heart healthy dietary fiber.

Of course, substitute a high sugar cereal or "snack crackers" and all bets are off. :ROFLMAO:

I find it amusing that you've taken umbrage to my views on eating cereal based on the notion that I'm on a "high horse".

All I did was express my own personal reasons for not eating cereal in a thread about eating cereal before bedtime and which asked the question "doesn't everyone?" which I answered.

I don't know why you have chosen to take my answer and related comments personally.

Maybe the cereal you eat is having negative affects on you.

No I did not take umbrage to your personal views on yourself eating or not eating cereal - in fact I specifically said several times do what suits you. As should everyone

I did point out that your view that crackers and cheese is somehow healthier or that cereal and milk is not good for (general) you are incorrect - or at least dependant on variables
As Tommy has shown in more detail

the cereal eat is Vitabrits or Weetbix - and as I said earlier, for me personally, only as a breakfast food

Eating a sensible portion of a low sugar cereal with milk is certainly not having any negative effects on me - I am a healthy weight and in good health.

I never have cereal at night time, in fact I don't eat it at Breakfast time either, I don't mind a weetabix now and then but it has to be hot milk. Oh and crunchy nut cornflakes aren't bad either.

I'm not sure if your US weetabix are the same as Australian weetbix - but I put a little bit of hot water on them first to soften them and then add milk

I don't eat cereal at all, nor do I drink milk, neither of which are particularly good for you.

I'll often have some cheese and crackers before bedtime.
it's quite amusing because I was the same as you for most of my life... never really liked cereal at all even for breakfast.. but in the last few years I started to buy it.. and I enjoy it... I have it with skimmed miilk..very occasionally.. In my food cupboard there is 3 cold cereals and 2 tubs of oatmeal...all of them have been there for months.. but I do enjoy a bowl occasionally usually at night...and I'll do the same with the Oatmeal

Ah, the Virtue Signaling.

"I'm better than you because I don't eat cereal or drink milk,
Only the unwashed and the unclean eat cereal and drink milk..."
