A Memorable Day

Yesterday was the first day for nearly two years that I got up without a lot of pain from either my back or knee. That was the best Christmas gift I could have ever received! My brother and I took two hikes through the snow, first for a mile and a half up our gravel lane. Since we are at the end of the two mile lane and out nearest neighbor is a mile up the road, the snow was prtistine as no one had driven on it. It was so quiet, except for the occasional bird calling, and snow sliding from the trees, you could almost hear a pin drop.

When we retuned, I played with the schnauzer gangstas in the snow. It was really fun to watch them run and hop around in the belly deep snow, chasing each other.. Later, we hiked in the woods behind the house, with my brother blazing the trail across the creek and through the woods, and me following in his big foot steps in the snow. I took a lot of pictures, and at one point stopped and reflected on what an absolutely joyful and memorable day it was.

When we returned we had some spirits to warm us up and a great venison stew that had been simmering in anticipation of the return two cold, hungry adventurers.

Thanks for letting me share my memorable day with you. I would love to hear about some of your most memorable days. Sometimes the most simple things stick in our minds as our greatest memories.

What a wonderful day! The best part is that you were able to walk that far:encouragement::encouragement:

Venison stew --------- I haven't had that in many many years. Don't look at me, I can barely cook much less fix venison so it's edible. It takes real skill to fix wild game and make it tasty:playful:

Ozarkgal, not sure this type of product would help you but here's a link to "Backontrack". http://www.backontrackproducts.com/People-Products-c17

I have their QuikWraps & Hock wraps and just ordered the Therapeutic Horse Back pad for my horse with the injured sacrum. The only reason I don't order stuff for myself is the horses need things more than me.

The leg and hock wraps just about perform miracles. These products have ceramic particles in them that re-generate the body's own heat; almost like a battery operated heating pad without the batteries - lol

I didn't know if heat helps or hurts you, so thought I'd post the link; notice they have dog stuff too.

The stuff is pricey but, so far, I am elated with the "value received" and how well the products I have work.

My 25 yo has hock/ankle arthritis. I leave the hock wraps on him 2 - 4 hours every morning, then take them off for turnout. He has gone from "stumping" out of his stall to almost having that swingy Walking Horse back end totally in motion when he comes out of his stall. His reach is much improved before he "walks out" of the stiffness because the stiffness has been reduced so much.

The horse with the fractured sacrum wears the Quik Wraps. He has different issues and needs to be kept warm. The Quik Wraps do a great job of warming him up before I re-wrap him to send him outside.

Anyway, because I know this stuff really does work, I thought you might like to look at their stuff for yourself or the Gangstas. People don't like to spend good money on anything, if the products are marginal, at best. I had seen really good reviews on a Hunter/Jumper forum, so took the chance. I have not been sorry:eek:nthego:

Thanks for sharing that Ozarkgal, that sounds like the perfect day for sure. Feeling good, enjoying Mother Nature's quiet and beauty, and playing with happy furkids is a nice combo! The stew, spirits and family did make extra special! Would love to see one of the pictures you took! :)

I remember living outside the city limits when there was a fresh snow. The woods was behind us and we all went for a walk in the woods. It was so pretty. I remember it being so peaceful and quiet. But, now I live in the city and try my best to avoid the crowds. And believe it or not, with careful planning, it is possible to avoid crowds in the city.

A week before Christmas, we attended a large Christmas lights and display event, which is walking along a park pathway in the dark, viewing Christmas lights and displays. It was just jammed packed with people from all ages. And it was hard to get near the railings to see the displays, as there was always a crowd at the railings.

Last night, my husband and I went for a walk around our neighborhood to view our neighbors' Christmas lights and displays in their yards and on their houses. It was quiet and we were the only ones walking along the sidewalks. Some of the neighbors' Christmas lights displays were just as interesting and elaborate as the displays in the city park. We could take our time without fear of bumping into someone or someone bumping into us. We could choose which street we wanted to walk along, in what ever order we choose, instead of having a crowd of people sweep us along. I enjoy Christmas lights but prefer to avoid crowds. I much preferred this walk of viewing Christmas lights more so that our city's big Christmas lights display.

And when we got home, we didn't have to wait in a looong line to order our hot cider. We just heated it up quickly on the stove and enjoyed our hot cider. Just the two of us.

Thankfully, we've had many memorable days together too. One that comes to mind was when we were camping in Colorado, next to a winding stream, and away from everyone. The spot was perfect, we had a huge grassy area where we parked our truck, and there was a beautiful vista on the other side of the stream, grassy steep hills with trees, rocks and wildlife like deer and lovely birds.

We started our day, sitting outside with the dogs, having our morning coffee and imported cookies. Then we put on our small day packs and started a magical walk on a comfortably narrow trail, which ran along a mountain. Either side of the trail was beautifully wooded, and the sky was blue, and the rays of the sun peeked through the dense canopy on the high side of the path...weather that day was perfection.

We walked in for a couple of miles, and as we walked, we notice so many wild berries along the sides of the trail. There were strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and cranberries. We picked quite a few, as we were walking and enjoyed them while we continued our journey, they were delicious.

When we saw a comfortable log to sit on for a rest, we would stop and drink some water and eat some of our homemade trail mix. We didn't need to water the dogs, as there were several fresh water mountain steams crossing the trail for them to drink from. We walked some more and came to a spot where the view was awesome. The peaceful quiet, other than the song of some birds, the fresh air and being alone in the glory of nature was so rewarding.

When we came back to our camp, we grilled a dry rubbed rib-eye steak that was waiting for us in our camper, we had canned veggies with it. Of course we enjoyed a couple of nicely chilled Foster's beers to complete the 'feast'. The rest of the evening we watched as the sun set, then retired into our camper and listened to some good music cds, we made of our favorites...perfect day for all of us, including the furkids.

Elzee ...Sounds like my kind of evening, kind of sweet and romantic too:love_heart:. We are so secluded most of the time that crowds make me nervous now. I get very frustrated trying to shop on busy days where you can't shop without dodging rude people and trying to get down packed aisles.

Thanks for the link TWH. Man..those quick wraps are spendy..ouch! Believe me, I know what you mean about your horses needing things more than you. That now goes for my dogs as well...vet annuals, dentals, incidental illness, premium dog food for two of the gangstas, and special diet foods for my problem child, new sweaters, etc. carved out of the ever shrinking household budget. Almost bad as kids and horses, except I don't have to buy them shoes..LOL
