A Survey for Fans of M*A*S*H TV Series

They all look familiar but a couple I can't name. Here's my guesses:

Top: Hunnycut, Winchester, Hawkeye
Middle: Hot Lips, Klinger, Radar
Bottom: Frank, Trapper John, Father Mulcahey?
Yep, Father Mulcahey in the bottom Right corner... love his "aw shucks" grin =D

I once got into watching every episode for a few months. It was a very well written, acted, and I thought struck an appropriate way to bring some levity to a tragic situation. I laughed and cried, and really got caught up in the characters. I wondered why each of the characters got replaced.

I asked "Pi"

Why were each m.a.s.h. charactors replaced
Throughout the 11-year run of MAS*H, there were several cast changes due to a variety of reasons:

  • McLean Stevenson (Henry Blake) and Wayne Rogers (Trapper John) left after the third season due to contract disputes and differences with the producers.
  • Larry Linville (Frank Burns) left in the sixth season due to feeling typecast and wanting to pursue other roles.
  • Harry Morgan (Sherman Potter) replaced McLean Stevenson as the unit's commanding officer in the fourth season after Henry Blake's tragic death in the show.
  • Mike Farrell (B.J. Hunnicutt) replaced Wayne Rogers as Hawkeye's best friend and foil in the fourth season, as Trapper John's actor left the series.
  • David Ogden Stiers (Charles Emerson Winchester III) replaced Larry Linville as the main antagonist to Hawkeye and B.J. in the sixth season, as the producers felt Frank Burns' character had reached its limits.
So, in summary, the cast changes on MAS*H were a combination of creative and logistical decisions, reflecting the dynamic nature of long-running TV series.
