Abortion rate way up for Down's syndrome pregnancies!

I have seen the devastation that a having severely retarded child can wreak in a couple's lives. More than once. I could spend paragraphs describing it but I won't. Sufficeth to say if I knew I was bearing a severely retarded child, I would opt for an abortion. There are far, far worse things than never having been born.

I guess I got up on my soapbox for awhile there. I just feel strongly about choice and there are all these groups trying to chip away at it bit by bit. I have to get that t shirt that reads " I Can't Believe I'm Still Protesting This ****!". And having a special needs kid, yeah I'm tweaky on the subject. You love them dearly but it's an experience. I didn't plan on Holland ya know?

I believe abortion is a woman's choice and hers alone.Fortunately I never was put in that place to have to make such a choice. Five years ago they wanted to give my daughter a test if her baby had that condition. My daughter and her husband decided not to have the test because even if the baby had Downs Syndrome that would not abort it. Thankfully the baby was born and she didn't have Downs Syndrome. It is a very difficult decision for anyone to make.

When she was in her forties, my aunt fostered a little baby girl who was born with multiple severe deficiencies. When my aunt finally died at 92, the last thing she spent her time doing was making sure that her '55 year old baby' was cared for and had support and a guardian who really did care. She loved her, guided her, arranged everything for her and I thought she was the most noble woman I had ever known. It takes all kinds of people to make this world and that little baby with issues helped my aunt grow in ways that she could never imagine.

Yeah that's something that keeps me up at night worrying about a guardian. Your aunt sounds like one of those folks who deserves sainthood. I'm sure her and the child were both blessed to have each other.

Your Aunt was one of God's angels on earth, Debbie, and was still devoting her life at 92 to be sure her 55 year old baby would be well taken care of when she was no longer able to be with her. A Special lady with a big heart! :love_heart: Thanks for sharing. :)
