Actor winds up filming brazen shoplifting in NYC where apparently no one cares

OMG perhaps the security guard is getting a cut of the spoils
more likely the security in stores have limited things they can do and if paid low why risk injury or such ....

Most of the security in stores/ malls etc are there in a "Stop or i will yell Stop again " situation.
Just hoping by the mere presence people will behave.
I find it odd that so many think they can tackle and arrest etc ... depending on state they often cannot touch the alleged thief.

IMO it's another sad sign of the times.

What can the security guard do other than saying stop or call 911?

If the issue escalates the media will eat the security guard and RiteAid alive over what amounts to a tube of toothpaste and the scofflaw will get a payday from a civil suit.

I'm not sure how we restore some sense of order to society.

Security guards and police don't want to get involved in this sort of thing anymore. They all saw what happened to police who were called because George Floyd essentially stole cigarettes by passing a counterfeit bill. They know things could go wrong, the thief could resist arrest, requiring the use of force or a Taser, confusion or anger take over and then -- bam, the police themselves are in prison, doing twice as much time as the criminal would because, instead of supporting themselves with a life of theft, dealing drugs and welfare, they mistakenly chose to work hard in a "position of responsibility."

..but that's like saying the police don't have to do their job..it's the job they are trained for and that's the same with security guards, or should be. if they're not trained to do the job of preventing thefts , then there's no point in having them... they may as well be working on the checkout

That's true. Store security staff are prohibited from any act of physical aggression because there have been so many lawsuits that resulted in huge payouts. Shoplifters have a right to sue for injuries even if they were doing something illegal at the time.

I saw a piece on laws no longer in play today in one city and among them were trespassing and disorderly conduct and 8 other similar level crimes. So the new way to solve our problems in America is to ignore them. Can you say" leadership crisis"?
Add to this SAT tests in schools are being modified so many more can pass like allowing calculators for math or to put it another way lower the standards so everyone can go to college where they then lower their standards so they can all get degreeze, degreases , degrease or whatever dem tings is.

Even if the store wasn't closing once this video got to the Mayor that Security guard should have lost his job immediately.
Retailer stores apparently don't want store security to act on a security matter, it's "bad" for business. I've known two different individuals, one having worked at Target, the other at Best Buy. Each was fired because they responded to a shoplifting incident which they witnessed. Both had police officer training and experience, and acted professionally. Most convienence store clerks know not to try to stop a robbery or try to apprehend the criminal. From the corporate perspective an employee acting in such a manner could become a liability, and subject the corporation to litigation.

Della said it best!
They criminalize and demonize police while criminals are set free. Illogical.

I understand that, but what I meant was, WHY did he think the Mayor could do squat about it?
well actors are not always thinking.... maybe he was directed to do that ....
the new mayor of NY has a big job to fix some issues not sure this will be on the top of his list....

There was a video of a woman stealing wigs..she was confronted and pulled a gun..guy😕 ran...she grabbed more and ran.

I have never been adept at higher mathematics, yet I have a university education. I was tutored extensively before and

during my course in statistics. In spite of that, my stats marks were never commensurate with my abilities in other subjects. (I

am not in research so math plays a minute role in my practice). I believe this speaks to aptitude rather than intelligence. 🙂
