Actors, athletes salaries

R.I.P. With Us In Spirit Only
Has it really occurred to you how much these top actors and athletes make (I didn't say earn intentionally)? What is wrong with us that we allow a climate to exist where an actor can make 20 million dollars for making one movie, where an athlete can receive a similar amount as a signing bonus? Most of the people involved in both industries would do what they do for "normal" wages if that huge money wasn't in the offing. Is it not obscene that a person could work their entire working life for maybe a total of $500k for 30 years labor only to see the subjects of this post flaunt their wealth.

Lest anyone say in the case of an athlete that the toll on their body justifies the salary, let me answer that by saying what then of the laborer who takes a toll on his body over all those years of hard, often backbreaking work.

Actors need the lights, the praise, the adoration. It's what gives them life. How much would they have to be paid to do their art were the huge money not available? What put us where we are? How can it be altered?

It is obscene to suggest any of the above subject are that valuable for doing their job while so many others work 100 times harder for thousand of times less..

I have struggled with this. Certainly has turned me off to a lot of pro sports. But I'm not gong to stop watching all sports and movies. That's about the only thing that would change it though......no viewers.

I don't know who are we to say what a celebrity or athlete is worth or should get. That is determined by the fans who pay for tickets to movies and sporting events along with the cable tv packages, dvds, souvenirs, memorabilia etc. Who is to say what I make or you make. Should there even be a master plan/pay scale. We could wind up like a communist country where the country not only tells you how much you will get paid but what you will do.

That is one way to look at it.

I'm more worried about the fans that propel those salaries. Especially the sports fan because it's gambling that's propelling the salaries and cable tv costs. There are some true fans/followers but a large chunk of that business is the gambler watching their investment or doing research for the future. Same for the celebrity. When you get fans who will pay 15-20 dollars to see a movie, pay 75$ for an autograph, pay 200 for a cable package they are just as much to blame for salary inflation because those involved tend to know the total take. I think their priorities are frequently more askew than those paying the salaries.

I agree that the money paid to the entertainment industry and sports industry is outrageous, but as long as people continue to pay the money to go see them, it's not going to change. I for one won't waste my time or my money on sports. I will however pay to see a movie through my cable company, but it's rare.

And several hundred dollars in some cases to see a concert. Unreal. But some have no problem shelling out the bucks to see it. Not me, but some would say I'm just a cranky old man. ;)

Some years back, a well-known basketball player signed a contract which paid him, based on past baskets made, about $12,000 per basket! imp

Our talent, our skills, our labor, our looks is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay us, no more or no less, so in the case of actors and atheletes yes they are worth it.

One of my favorite actors receives 12 million for a photo shoot. He's very handsome, but is this fair? No way. I think this will continue until one of two things happens,

1) People become so educated they begin to value substance over appearances, no longer spending wads of cash on the beautiful.

Or

2) Everyone becomes beautiful through genetic manipulation. Once we all look equally beautiful it won't matter anymore.

I have no answer to athletic ability although I guess it could work the same way one day.

All but Katie Couric, IMO. Had I negotiated her 3-year contract, it surely would not have been for $85 million! imp

What about Judge Judy !!!!!!

It was reported in mid-2012 that Sheindlin was the highest paid television personality, making $123,000 per episode of Judge Judy, or $45 million annually for the 52 days per year that she tapes her show.

I don't see how people watch these shows. But I'm sure there are some shows I watch others would say the same thing about.

What is even more grating to me is that people get their noses out of joint at what Doctors make.. Twisted priorities IMO.. OK for some jackass to run back and forth with a ball.. but not OK for a person who has spent 12+ years of college to gain the knowledge and skill to literally hold your heart in their hands and fix it. Does that not strike anyone else as backwards?

RE:Actors, athletes salaries .

The people that pay big bucks to see these athletes, actors are the idiots not the performers.
