Actually ‘going’ to the movies

This had to have been done already

But, oh well

When’s the last time you set foot in a theater?
What’d you see?
Was it worth it?
Will you ever go again?

I cannot recall the last time I went
Or what I saw
I do remember the $20 popcorn and $5 drink…..

I was recently tempted to go when Hacksaw Ridge came out
But
It went away

I do like being mesmerized by ‘the big screen’
But, hey, technics of today has pretty much put those in the comfort of our homes
Heh, we, even in our tiny cabin, have a 37” screen tucked up in a corner across the room from our easy chairs

I wonder how long it will be before the movie theaters go the way of the drive in….

I do still love the opera, the live stage
James Canfield’s Rock Ballet, Dark Side of the Moon, back in ‘06
Gershwin’s Porgy
Even saw Eartha Kitt not long before she passed, at an old converted downtown Portland theater now called ‘The Schnitzer’ concert hall

THAT was a performance
She really worked the crowd

However

Doubt I’ll ever set foot in movie house ever again

I sorta want to be sad about it

Can’t

On Golden Pond, 1980
No, we had to sit in the front row because one member of our party (the driver) was late, and those were the only seats left. :eewwk:
Not likely, but who knows.

Last movie was Hacksaw Ridge in 2016.
I enjoyed it because it was such a visual experience.
I went in the afternoon when prices are lower so it was worth it to me.
I'm sure I'll go back. I wish I had watched Dunkirk in a theater instead of at home.

I went to see Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri last week. A friend and I went to a matinee showing and I got our tickets at discount so it was a good deal for the money. We both enjoyed the movie, especially Frances McDormand.

Dunkirk is definitely a see it in a theater movie. Anything that relies on cinematography and/or visual effects is going to be better in a theater.

Maybe 4 years ago
Don't remember
No
I hope not

I think it's too loud in there and I fidget.

Had to really think about this one. I think the last movie I saw in the theater was Martian w/ Matt Damon (2015). I really liked it alot more than I thought I would.

I watched Wind River with Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen on Netflix this weekend. Throughout the movie, I suppose to add to the "drama," the sound track makes the sound of nearby explosions that have absolutely nothing to do with the movie. I hated it because every time they did it, they took me out of the movie thinking what the hell?

Maybe they knew the movie was a turkey and they were trying to create interest. Too bad because they could have hired a Native American actor who would have fit the part better and built a better movie instead of a star vehicle.

We go to the movies occasionally. I don't worry about the price of soft drinks and popcorn because I never buy any, but what bugs me is how people behave there. We saw "Wonder Woman" last summer and the teenagers next to us got up and down constantly through the movie to get food. We went to see "Victoria and Abdul" in October and the ladies in back of us chatted constantly. We got up and moved in both cases.

I'm an old grouch and I can't see why someone can't survive for two hours without having to get more soda or chatting on the phone or checking their messages. Getting up and going to the bathroom....well, I can understand that, but if you have that small of a bladder, then sit on the end of the row so that you bother a minimum amount of people. If your baby starts fussing, take it out of the theater. Yes, I know you paid to see the movie, but so did everyone else in the theater. Turn off or mute your phone. 99.99% of the calls you'll receive can wait until the movie is over. If you HAVE to take the call, get up and go out to the lobby. Your "whispers" are a lot louder than you think.

Off the soapbox....

Your post fits in with an opinion I read recently stating that Hollywood's movies are becoming less well written and good writing is being replaced with noise and special effects.

In the Summertime we like to go to the afternoon show to get out of the heat, plus it's cheaper.
I think the last movie we saw was either The Shack, or Skull Island, last year.

That definitely applied to this movie. There was zero chemistry between the two main actors and they probably thought doing faux explosions would accomplish something. All they did was make the lack more obvious.

It would be fun to see you watch this movie because you would be fidgeting constantly.

The last time we went to the movies was last summer when we visited my daughter. The Grand kids wanted to see Jungle Book and I told the hubby I would like to see a movie in 3D. So we paid the price. I had seen a 3D movie in Disney World when my kids were small. It was fantastic. The butterflies seemed to sit right on your shoulder. Not so this time around. Since my daughter majored in computer animation in college she explained that the 3D in the movies is not the same as what I saw. An expensive mistake. The theater had recliners that I must say were very comfortable. The man sitting next to me was chomping on Nachos in cheese sauce. The noise and smell was horrible. I'll stick to my videos from the library or Redbox.

The last time I went to a movie was a couple of years ago. A friend and I read the book "Gone Girl", and we decided to go see the movie. I already knew it was going to be a mistake, but I thought it would be fun to talk about it afterwards. It did turn out to be a mistake because I was constantly comparing the movie with the book, and it didn't work for me. I had my own visuals about the places and the people, and my cast and production was way better. :)

"Sleeping With the Enemy", 1991. I hate going to the movie theater. Much rather wait on them to appear On Demand or on Netflix where I can watch from my recliner, have the snacks I want, and not be annoyed by the unwashed masses.

Olivia, I am a reader, too. I always cringe when I see a movie that was made from a book I enjoyed; they NEVER live up. One great example is Still Alice, by Lisa Genova. The book was excellent and left such an impression on me that I have read it two more times. I couldn't resist watching the movie (on cable) and though I thought Julianne Moore did an excellent job, the movie could not compare to that book.

Oh, and I agree on Gone Girl, though I didn't think the was book very good and found none of the characters were likeable. :D

Last month, to see Darkest Hour. We had a chocolate coated ice cream cone before the movie and a very enjoyable lunch afterwards at a nearby pub. We paid seniors concession rate, the movie was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed the outing. The audience on a Friday morning was well behaved and the theatre was recently renovated and very comforable.

I think most of you know by now from my avitar screen name,I love going to the movies. I have an account with Regal Cinema here in Buffalo,I've accumulated so many credits, the past 3 movies I've seen have been free,in the process 1700 credits are deducted each time, which is ok I don't buy any popcorn, drink or candy, too expensive. The seats are recliners, very comfortable
Last Mon afternoon,I saw'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" which I enjoyed, had the theatre to myself. The movie opened in Dec'17,was panned by most of the critics, but has become a blockbuster hit
When I decide I want to see a movie, always ck to see when the 1st showing is.I try to go around 12:30 or 1pm at the latest, because I take the bus since I don't drive. When my 'movie buddy',Alexei is available we go together. He provides the transportation,I pay for the tickets.
The last 3 free movies I've seen are "Jumanji","Shape of Water',"Peter Rabbit" Sue

We went out tonight for a movie and dinner afterwards, saw Bad Times at the El Royale, good movie, kept our interest till the very end. Don't see it if violence or language bothers you.

I just don't have the patience to sit through a whole movie anymore.

And I'm at a real disadvantage. I'm always imagining where the camera is and how they get the effects and close ups.

It ruins it for me.

The last time I was in a movie theater was in about 87' when I went alone to see the Vietnam war movies "Full Metal Jacket" and "Hamburger Hill"......both brought back memories and were hard for me to watch.

Oh man I LOVE the movies!! A new AMC theater recently opened up at my local Mall, and it added a whole new dimension to our moviegoing experience. With comfortable, very padded reclining seats, and a full bar, what's not to like! Laying back in a comfy chair with a Mojito by my side, I could watch anything with pleasure. ;) We make an afternoon of it...head to the theater to watch whatever, and then when we come out head to Bar Louie just down the way from the theater in the same mall complex, and have cocktails and an early dinner.

We've gone to a few movies this year. The last couple were Jurassic World and the latest Avengers movie. Seems like there was one more recent one, but I can't remember. Guess it wasn't that memorable lol!! And we'll definitely go again! I'm really looking forward to seeing the latest Mama Mia movie!! Ron, not so much ;) but he'll go away because he's sweet like that!

I pay attention to what movies are playing but rarely go.
I went 2 weeks ago to see a documentary about a rock climber in California
and left early, bored. Only cost $6. One theatre charges 4. near me for matinees, I still don't go
because I am annoyed and tired of horror, fantasy, very violent movies and animation.
Before that I saw Christopher Robin about Winnie the Pooh and enjoyed it.
I strongly believe in seeing the film the way it is meant--in the theatre and dislike the DVDs
on a small screen. A very inauthentic inadequate way to watch most movies, especially the ones with
much action and adventure.
I have many complaints about movies, but besides the usual ones, I think most critics are
unreliable, at least in U.S. They either very overrate the movie giving it a 90 or 100 on Rotten Tomatoes site
or almost zero if they hate it. Their biases are very evident to me--very liberal biases by the way. Did you know that
Rotten Tomatoes rating site is owned by Paramount Studios?

1990 - Went to see it with a girlfriend since my man didn’t want to
Edward Scizzorhands and I watched it again the other night. It was corny then too but entertaining.

Movie theatres aren’t places I normally like going. There are too many people and I feel trapped sometimes
