Adolf Hitler was born today (April 20) in 1889.

Today in 1889 Adolf Hitler was born. He probably murdered more people than any murderer in all history with the possible exception of Genghis Khan of the Mongols.

I started a post saying that I believe Stalin was responsible for more deaths than Hitler, but a quick search revealed that Stalin's "number" is approximately 6 million, whereas the number of deaths attributed to Hitler and the Nazis is ~11 million.

Didn't he die on the same day he got married? Some might say, double trouble. Or was it just Eddie Izzard who said that?

Like as into a higher lifeform... like maybe a cockroach?
there's a lot of evil been born in the years since his demise..he could have been any one of those...

In today's media...this....

A former CIA agent claims there is a growing body of evidence showing Adolf Hitler faked his own death in Germany and actually escaped to Argentina, where followers tried to reboot his fallen Nazi empire.

Bob Baer, who spent his 21-year career in espionage, says the official version of history - with Hitler dying by suicide in 1945 - might need rethinking once anticipated bombshell evidence is released.

He expects a forthcoming set of documents out of Argentina to reveal possible entanglements between the fascist dictator and the South American government that may have been hiding him.

Baer, 72, believes the archives on Nazis who fled to Argentina after the war may spotlight efforts to build a Fourth Reich in South America, and implicate Argentinian officials in the support of Nazis, money laundering schemes and more.

He's anticipating a paper or money trail pointing to both Argentinian government involvement in the construction of a possible Nazi hideout in the Misiones province (which was uncovered in a 2015 archaeological dig), and President Juan Perón's backing of a 1950s nuclear fusion lab headed by a Nazi scientist on a remote island.

We don't yet know when Argentinian officials plan to release the findings, but we do know this idea of Hitler's escape has been examined for decades.

Even the Eisenhower administration took the toppled führer's possible survival seriously, Baer says.

I've heard of this kind of stuff too, HD... and some of it is kinda' scary.
There was even a TV show here in the US about some folks that went searching
for remaining evidence that might still be around. Things like documents, people, buildings and a little digging...
Some of the things seemed compelling to me, but idk.

The issue of Hitlers suicide is interesting. I'll look forward to more information over the years. If proper forensics were not available back then, faking his own death would make perfect sense. Were I in his shoes, it would have certainly been my first choice. It's possible that Hitler was so overwhelmed by his defeat that he may have killed himself. Both scenarios, without supporting evidence are equally plausible.

My mom’s grandfather escaped from Germany and came to the USA as a teenager. My mom said once he couldn’t work because he was too old and sick he came to live with them. He read the German newspaper daily and thought that Hitler would save Germany and bring it out of its depression.

One day the newspaper came and the headline said that Hitler had invaded Poland. Her grandfather stood up, grabbed his chest and died of a heart attack in front of her.

I have never forgotten that story and it explains how people can be fooled on a massive level if a leader is charismatic and otherwise appeals to them. Of course back then news traveled slowly.

Now news travels fast but there’s so much disinformation that one has to take the time to seek out the truth. Too many people aren’t willing to take the time to do so.

The story of your great grandfather is very interesting. I sometimes wonder how many Germans supported Hitler. I get the impression his support was massive. I also wonder how much the German people actually knew what he was doing. I understand the allies forced people living near the camps to work burying the dead. At first, I assume they had nothing to do with the slaughter. Of course protesting the German program would have got them killed. There were probably many innocent bystanders caught in a Catch-22.

I once in UK worked with a lovely German lady and once the conversation got around to war and Hitler and she pleaded " many many ordinary working class germans didn't know what to believe or what was going on but just had to accept what they were told to do?" Such was the way of the working class at times?

Hitler turned Germany into a dictatorship in 60 days. People would have had to realize what was happening and acted quickly. I have read many books about this time and many ordinary people worked with the underground community to stop what was happening. This included college students and seniors. Of course many were caught and executed.

People turned in their family members and friends as well as neighbors. Of course people were afraid. Being afraid to act is much less despicable than turning in people. Of course many people hid the Jews once they understood what was happening.

That fact that we know Hitler's birthday is an indication of his importance in world history, and continues to be factor today with neo-Nazi groups throughout the world. Who cares when Stalin was born? Hitler was a total psychopath, but his views are still active on the internet. Hitler may be dead, but his warped Aryan Race concepts are still with us. Unfortunately, that still resonates with some people today.

I had read once an account of his early youth life - I think a lonely child not nurtured much by his parents but had developed a slight interest in canvas picture painting which he for a while pursued - yes he must have turned into a psychopath for sure later in life

Saw an interesting thread today on either Mastodon or Bluesky; now can't find it to link to unfortunately. Anyway, it was a post by a guy who lives and was born and raised in Germany and said they learned about the Holocaust and the Nazis in school. At that time, he said there were still alive some non-Jewish Germans who'd been adults during that time and the students were given assignments to interview them.

He said that over and over, they kept telling the students, "Oh, I didn't know anything about that, wasn't aware of any of that" even when the kids showed them numerous newspaper clippings from that time laying it all out. He said in the interviews he personally did that the only time one of the adults admitted knowing about any of what was going on, he was very drunk and yelled at them to leave him alone.

I think that kind of denial happens a lot unfortunately. I also wish that U.S. schools could operate more like that but not expecting to see any of that any time soon.

I did some reading about Hitler's suicide since the topic came up. There seems to be a rather strong consensus, based on Allied interrogations of those around Hitler at the time that he indeed killed himself with quite a few details about it. But I still wonder.
