Adult ear drainage tube ?

My right ear has been stopped up for quite awhile (years) and up till now I've just been biting the bullet and putting up with it......hearing in my right ear is always muffled and I feel a dull pressure and slight ache constantly with some days being worse than others, this morning it's VERY bothersome and because it is I'm again contemplating having something done.

Not that it's related but I've also had tinnitus constantly in both ears for several years.

A few years back I went to a ENT and he attempted to install a drainage tube in the office and before trying he told me that only a small percentage of people can handle the cutting of the ear drum and inserting the drain without being admitted to the hospital and given a general anesthetic but most can't......I couldn't and left.

I recall coming home and getting on the computer after the appointment and researched the procedure and of course I found several horror stories of people that had complications and problems with excessive bleeding, infection and the tube clogging up afterwards......but there are risks with any procedure I suppose.

From what I recall after the procedure, you're given antibiotics and you've got to plug your ears to keep water from entering the tube when showering (till the tube comes out), use ear drops and normally over the counter pain meds are sufficient......I read that after 10-12 months they just fall out on their own ?

Of course I've tried the holding my nose and blowing many, many times and I can hear and feel gurgling, popping and crackling so there is definitely fluid of some sort in my ear that is just not draining sufficiently and hasn't for several years.....normally after holding my nose and blowing if I can force a yawn afterwards I hear a pop and my ear opens somewhat.

As most know stopped up ears, ear infections and ear tubes are normally a childhood problem and not so much with adults from what I've read......I guess I'm just fortunate.

Has anyone ever had or known anyone that has had a ear drainage tube installed as a adult and how was the experience ?

Thoughts ?

No, but I think I would consult another ENT specialist. Things may have changed by now. Medical changes come so fast it is hard to keep up with them; maybe there's something new that would help.

Good idea BF......maybe it's time for a second opinion.

They tried to do that procedure on me quite a few years back. They didn't get very far, very uncomfortable to say the least. Ended up just taking antibiotics. For all I know it might have been the cause of my hearing loss that I have now. Then again maybe it was the antibiotics, who knows? Whats done is done.

I had right ear blockage (fluid buildup) and it was aggravating for over 4 months. ENT prescribed medicine and then decided I had to go the tube route (in March)... in both ears. In the hospital, outpatient, general anesthesia, then home, with cotton in my ears. Had to use ear drops twice daily for two weeks, with cotton in my ears afterward.

Despite the horror stories, there was no pain afterwards and I am now good to go.

I get hearing tests annually and had one prior to tubes and then one a couple of weeks ago. Just prior to tubes, both ears had hearing loss with right ear quite a lot. The after tests were in line with previous years and conductive (?) tests.

As someone else stated, I also would blow my nose hard, etc. thinking it would help (ear popping and temporary relief). As the ENT had said the root cause was a deviated septum, I even bought a "navage". He explained to me that while I might think it was helping, it was only temporary and likely contributing to increasing the problem, due to people my age and older having weaker immune systems. He told me to stop trying to force the issue and to stop using the navage.

I thought it was just me, looks like I got some company.having this ailment. I recently did a round of antibiotics for a [correctly diagnosed] ear infection.

Wax build up is a problem as well, had a lavage done at the doctor's office, about 3 or 4 months ago.

I had my ears flushed Monday by my regular MD and he recommended I see a different ENT.....I've got a appointment to see the new fella at 10:30 on 5-30-2017, hopefully he'll be able to come up with something to give me a little relief.

Those tubes can be a pain in more ways than one. You can't shower or swim, the ear can't get wet.

Be careful with the equalizing/blowing into pinched nose. Minimal breath only. I'd work on making sure your sinuses are clean and clear, could try salt water spray along with some sinus medications but that could be forever. Very carefully try to keep ears dry after a shower or swimming. Extra fluids could be an allergic reaction as well. Not everyone sneezes, their bodies react differently. And yes a second or third opinion can't hurt.

i went to my ent doctor because my ear was always itchy he said he would call in a prescription 91.00 i said forget it---he said my ears looked fine but i could hardly hear so i went home and removed a lot of wax from my ear so that prescription would of been a waste of money
