I love these dames, they have style, that's for damn sure. I don't find these gals pretentious at all, they have style and panache.

Sorry men, this is boring no doubt.

A friend sent me the book and now there is a documentary being made. They are not slaves to fashion, quite the contrary, they are only true to themselves, no matter what. I was sent the book, because for the last 20 years or so I have been dressing like a refugee from a Gypsy camp. LOL And on purpose! Just because I like the look for me anyway, but lately I have been dressing like I have just escaped from a Prison Farm bus. And I like it much better. For now.

The book is awesome, they have quotes from all the ladies about life and they are deep thinkers, well that comes with age. No flibbertigibbets here.

If I were rich, gay, dreamed of looking like Elton John and lived in the desert I could be a trend-setter, too ... I mean, who's to complain? The Gila Monsters?

That's a fashion statement - that isn't style. Style is classy and understated, not loud and in-your-face.
 
Well I wasn't talking about the gay men. It's the Ladies in the book, class can be expressed in many ways, a sense of your own personal style, whatever it is, is only a minor part of it.

You can be classy in barn boots and a flannel shirt. Or an worn out chenille flannel bathrobe. It comes from the inside.

Style, I believe, is genetic! My mother could wear anything and look good. I can wear anything and look frumpy. She could wear a hat and look like Audrey Hepburn, I could wear the same hat and look like Ma Kettle.
I gave up caring about fashion at an early age, she was still adamant about what she'd wear, or NOT!, in a nursing home at age 91!

I grew up believing that all mothers changed their clothes to go out the front door and walk the 5 paces to the letter box in case someone was passing and might see her in her 'house' clothes!

That 'stylish' thing may appear to be a good thing for oldies to do, but believe me, you DO NOT WANT TO LIVE WITH ONE!

Which is why highlighting a screamer among the more seriously fashion-minded was, IMHO, just wrong. He was buying his way into being stylish. And for a certain element within the gay community, dressing outrageously is de rigueur - it shouldn't be held up as an innovative style.

Yep, yep, that was my Mom as well. The only thing she didn't put on were the Audrey Hepburn elbow-length gloves. I remember her telling me we were going to the town square. I'd put on a clean T-shirt and pants and my Keds, and be ready in under a minute. She'd be doing major reconstructive surgery in her room - clouds of perfume would come wafting out, there would be a gypsy-mound of clothing on the bed and the jewelry boxes (note the plural) would be spilling forth their contents like little pirate treasure chests.

An hour later we might have been ready to go.

But you know what? I prefer that to what is seen on a daily basis in any Wal-Mart these days ...

Again some of us seem to have the same mother. My mom is 85 and still has to get gussied up to go any place. When I was a kid we always had to wait for her, she was never ready and she still isn't. She won't leave the house without her "war paint" on, I keep telling her she looks much better without all of that stuff on her face. But why would she start to listen to anything I have to say now.

Me I never wear any makeup and never did. And it seems the "old hippie" in me is having a hard time giving up that era too. So who am I to make any kind of judgement calls.

Ah the People of Wal-Mart. I am always so shocked and amazed at the things people go out of the house in. As the picture Phil shared with us..AHHH!!!!!

I always wonder what goes through a person's mind before they go out of the house looking like her. "The only bad thing about going to Wal-Mart is I have to get dressed up."

Yes it does. Just me, but I want/need to be dressed 'for the occasion', whatever it is. My "dressy" outfits are way in the back of the closet these days. They never see the light of day anymore, and my 'any given day' wear is basically jeans/shorts and t-shirts. Comfort is what rules me now. .. But I just couldn't show up anywhere looking look a tasteless bum, or freak show ..just not in my DNA...lol

What some people wear (Phil's picture) when they go out in public is truly amazing. They must not have an IQ and they must not have a mirror! .. the only thing I can deduct from it.

I say that all the time.."Don't these people have a mirror in their house."

I'm the same way Mom of Boo and so is my husband, he has a nice suit and top coat, we call them his Funeral clothes. Normally on a daily basis he is, Levi's, work boots and t-shirts or flannel shirts, but he is "old school' when it comes to a funeral, he will only go in a suit. It's a sign of respect for him. We splurged big time when his mother died a few years ago, she would have been so proud of him in his new duds, just for her.

We are both all about comfort, comfort out weighs everything. My daily attire is either cargo pants, jeez I love all those pockets, or Levi's and mostly black tee shirts.

I was glad to have been a "hippie" in my youth, but I was always so disappointed I was too young to be a beat-nik and too old to be a Goth.
