Our communities Dentist for over 20 years visited today. FIRST TIME WITHOUT MASKS!!! YEA! We hadn't seen him for over a year. He travels a lot and was showing us pics on his "I Phone". He gets a call, and his watch rings. 😮 I looked down and he answers after he reads his watch. WHAT? So I investigate what this watch IS. It is an Apple Watch, and it links with his phone through wi-fi. It has more computing power than what we used to put a man on the moon! He can talk to it, and it does what he asks. I felt like I was meeting with James Bond! Ha! :)

One of the first things we'd read in the Sunday comics (Chicago Tribune or Sun Times).

I have looked at Apple watches in the past, something for medical alert use ... decided that my brain could not handle it!

I’ve had a Apple Watch for 12 months. I can answer a call or read a text or email on it.

I like the Heath apps including heart / oxygen / ECG / readings.
Fall detection or simply calling emergency services if you feel unwell

I have had an Appple watch for several years now. My daughter got her first Apple Watch when they came out with the series 2, which was waterproof for swimming. The Series 3 came out with cellular, so that you didn’t have to keep it close to your phone, and she upgraded, and gave me the Series 2.
When they came out with the ECG function on Series 4, she got me one of those, because I have heart failure and a-fib, and it helps me to monitor how my heart is doing, and it is also cellular.
The Series 6 also checks blood oxygen, which is very important for us older people as well, and that is what I have right now.

I LOVE my Apple Watch ! I love that it is cellular, and I mostly don’t even take my phone along with me when we are just going to the fitness center, because if I get an important call or text message, I can answer it with the watch.
It has my emergency numbers programmed in, so if I fell or lost consciousness, it will call my emergency contacts, as well as 911, and the gps on the watch will tell the EMT people exactly where to find me.

I have a lot of health apps on my iPhone, and most of them also connect with my watch, so my activity is also monitored with the watch.
At first, I thought I could not possibly use something as small as a ā€œwrist computerā€; but it soon turned out that it was simple to use, and easy to wear, and there are a zillion different bands, from pretty to functional, so you can pick what suits you the best.

There are a lot of different watch faces that you can use. I usually use one of the activity tracker faces, but you can even use photographs from your computer, as in this picture that I like of myself and my husband.

I have mini mouse on mine ,:)she even tells me what time it is and says a cheery ..good morning / after noon / evening

Sitting here and reading this thread made me think of my old Timex watch, that gave out years ago. I haven't worn a watch since and after reading all these good things about the Apple watch, maybe it would be nice to have one. Then I remember that the watch would be just one more thing, among the many, that regularly need charging - 3 cameras , 2 iPhones, i iPad, 2 drone batteries, 1 drone controller, 1 helmet communicator and radio and 1 Bluetooth mini speaker. Don't think I want the Apple watch any more.

I've thought about it often over the years of having an apple watch.Even my friend @Happyflowerlady has tried to convince me for several years, but the truth is I have a lot electricity in my body , and everything electric I touch goes wrong..lol:ROFLMAO:..so despite owning everything Apple..Iphone, Mac desktop, Ipad etc..I've decided that the apple watch is just one step too far for me personally .

If I'd still been working outside of the home , I might have been more convinced but now I'm retired I don't need it...

I absolutely LOVE my Apple watch. Series 5. As @Happyflowerlady described, it does all those things and makes me feel more secure. I’ve mentioned before about falling and know it works even if I didn’t have to call an emergency number.

Before the watch, I’d carry my iphone around the house if I were alone. Now if I go to the basement, I know I’m close to my security alert.

Sometimes when I’m in public, my phone has rung. Quick glance tells me the number and I turn it off. No need to dig into my purse for the iPhone. When I make a purchase, my wrist signals that there’s been a transaction on my credit card. If I’m out, it notifies me if someone has approached the home security system. Etc, etc, etc.

I believe similar events are possible if you have a non-iPhone and attached watch.

Currently using a Samsung watch, did not warm up to apple anything, as a Tech person can work on most, just default, to android.

It does receive calls so one can avoid trying to get at a phone. Features include heart rate monitoring, walking activities, news, music, emails just about most things done on a phone.

I still have regular watches, just for fun, ones that do not need batteries, charging, or winding. They help, but are not the be all end all, and so do not wear any for most of the time....

I'm not especially tech savvy so I have this question, are the medical features of the watch applicable if one doesn't have a smart phone?

I’ve mentioned it before ….My hubby slipped on a wet floor in his shed while messing about washing the kitchen under sink water filter ,his watch detected his fall and right away wanted to phone emergency services ,he was alert so was able to dismiss the alert.
I was home but in the house so he phoned me from the watch telling me he’d hurt himself so I was able to assess him and ring the ambulance .
If I wasn’t home he could have taken advantage of the option of letting the watch call the ambulance.
He broke his hip and required a hip replacement which required he being flown to the city hospital by the flying doctor .
In saying that we wouldn’t be with out or watch .
I can’t answer your question @Oris Borloff however most of the apps and functions are on the phone to make it’s easy to read say an ECG and or a record of heart rates / exercise/ oxygen
so I’m not sure how a watch would work on a android phone

That's a very good question....

As far as I know, the features of an Apple Watch can work without having the iPhone nearby, if you have the cellular model and not the Regular model. I can leave my phone at home, and go places, and the Apple Watch still functions: phone, emergency alerts, ECG, heart rate, blood oxygen, etc.
So, the watch does not have to be with the phone to be able to work; however, you DO have to have an iPhone to pair the watch with. On the iphone is an app for the watch, and that is where you can update the faces, the operating system, and stuff like that.
The health features of the Watch sync with the Apple Health app on the phone, and the information can even be sent directly to your doctor if you want to do that.

I realize that having something like an Apple Watch, or even a smart phone, is not for everyone; but everyone that I know of who has one loves having it and feels so much more secure. They are not worried about falling and not being found right away, or just being somewhere that you need to call for help immediately.
My husband was helping a friend with his house, and he had to crawl under the house, and it was a very tight space. He didn’t want to take his phone along, but was concerned how he could call for help if he somehow got trapped under there.
The Apple Watch ( he didn’t have one at that time) would have been perfect for that situation, where you need to be able to make a call, but can’t take a phone with you.
