Adventurous Platypus stows away.

It was a 'she' and it was a matter of urgency to return her to the same part of the creek that she came from because there would probably be joeys in a burrow nearby.

I love it when people take the time to rescue/care for animals and their needs like this. If they didn't, our species would be beyond redemption.

This is amazing, more so because I thought they were extinct for some reason, but then I decided maybe I was thinking of the Dodo bird.

Of course I know the difference between a Dodo Bird and a Platypus, but I thought they were both extinct.

They're on the endangered list Hipster but still around. They were never numerous as they have a fairly restricted habitat. They live in similar places you'd expect to find Beavers but there are a whole lot less of those permanent wet habitats here. They don't build dams so are reliant on permanent water, and quiet places with mud banks to burrow into. They're treated with respect by all, it's a real treat to see one and people sneak around so as not to scare them. Can't recall hearing of anyone harming them, but I guess some psycho has at one time or other. They're fairly rare but not extinct just yet.

But, even they are venomous, the males have a spur on their hind legs that can deliver a dose of nastiness but I'm not sure what the symptoms are. The one in the car was female or they'd have been handling it a lot more carefully.

It does my heart good to hear how well they are treated and respected.

That is fascinating about the Males, these are really remarkable critters, what a mixture they are.

They are a bit strange, couldn't make up their minds what to be so they tried a bit of bird and grew a beak and lay eggs, and the rest is mammal, fairly screwed up li'l cuties. Echidnas lay eggs too but they aren't as weird as the Platypus.
