Alcohol

I was thinking, "if there was no alcohol, would the World be
a better place"?

Then I remembered history and Prohibition in America, the
gangsters almost tore the country apart to get people to
buy their booze.

I also remember how the Middle Eastern countries are and
all follow a religion that doesn't allow alcohol consumption,
this seems to make them crazy, they fight each other, then
they attack other countries where alcohol is allowed, many
are killed for the want of alcohol.

Maybe I got it all wrong and we should be flooding the place
with alcohol, to promote peace, give them enough and they
will sleep all day and party all night.

Some people have had bad experiences with alcohol. They themselves or their families or friends have had problems with it. They've watched their loved ones struggle with addiction, and it's turned them off alcohol completely. I know people whose parents were alcoholics, and they also became alcoholics. There are others who came from alcoholic parents and never touched alcohol. Others don't like the taste or how it makes them feel. Some people drink to excess, and others drink moderately. There are people who think they're better than others because they don't drink. Oy!

Whatever the case may be, it's up to the individual to form a relationship with alcohol. Whatever a person decides, please spare me the holier-than-thou righteousness about the “evils” of alcohol. It's only as bad as people make it.

My parents (especially mother) were against the 'evils' of drink and how I should never touch alcohol. I couldn't wait to try it!
In my younger days, I sometimes overdid it, but as I've got older I drink less, but enjoy it a lot more. One thing I miss about no longer living in England is getting a pint of decent real ale. As compensation, there are some great distilleries in this area.

This is purely anecdotal, but as far as Muslims going crazy for want of alcohol....

A friend was an apartment manager. He filled his building with Muslims. He said, "They pay their rent on time, they don't drink much, and their childen are well behaved." (Sometimes the men would have a beer -- not 12 beers.)

Some other apartment managers had prejudices and didn't want Muslims in their buildings. He told them, "Send them to me."

Frankly, alcohol is a poison. And we all know the effects of alcoholism. Yet, taken in small amounts , it acts to promote social events. Like, in "Cheers", where everybody know your name. One of the first things we, as a species, learned was how to make beer. So, we've had a long relationship with alcohol, and its uses. I'm not sure the lack of it causes craziness.

Funny how a couple words can bring back otherwise long forgotten memories. Sitting with a friend at JFK waiting for the Pan Am flight to Jeddah......young guy, (we recognized as a Saudi in mufti), was sitting at the same table having a beer....older Saudi comes up and starts haranguing him in Arabic.

"Sorry, but I don't understand" the kid replied in English.....we knew he did, the older Saudi knew he did, and he knew we all knew. :ROFLMAO:

Have you read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley?
Soma equals tranquilisers? Alcohol equals Soma?

I get it and I agree. I remember the sixties when everyone smoked weed and cigarettes and expanded their minds. That was the flower child, peace and love era. It was better than the world we've got now.

I've read it has benefits in small amounts. It's not a problem unless it's abused.

Most things in moderation are fine even if not really good for you. As we learn more about alcoholism it appears to have a genetic component which is why some people have issues. It can also be a coping mechanism so like most things in life it’s complicated.

Some great posts here and I thank you all for taking the time,
my original post was a bit "Tongue-in-cheek", without meaning
to offend, just one of my crazy thoughts, one day I might get it
right.
