(CNN)"Jeopardy" host Alex Trebek is hoping for a victory as he wages a battle against cancer.

The longtime game show host on Wednesday announced he's been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in a video posted to the show's official YouTube account.

"Now, normally, the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I'm going to fight this. And I'm going to keep working and with the love and support of my family and friends -- and with the help of your prayers also -- I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease," he said.

Pancreatic cancer, on average and across all stages, has a 5-year survival rate of 9%, accordingto the American Cancer Society.

Trebek, 78, has hosted "Jeopardy" since 1984, when the show began airing daily in syndication.

Saw it on his show yesterday and was very sad to hear it. He seems to be a very kind and gracious man and I pray he will beat it altho I realize what he is up against.

My mother died from pancreatic cancer. They discovered it when they did exploratory surgery. They closed her right up and gave her 3 months to live..She died 3 months later after being bedridden for 3 months.

Very bad news, indeed. I wish him the best. Having cancer patients in my family who have passed, I know what a fight he will be faced with. I wish him and his family, strength.

I had no idea he is 78, he does not look that old. He should quit the show and take time to smell the roses..what ever the hell that may be Thoughts and prayers.

He certainly has had his share of health problems over the yrs
Two minor heart attacks in 2011,2012
Last yr he renewed his contract for 3 more yrs hosting'Jeopardy'
I wish him luck/prayers with this latest news

Sad to see. I too hope he is one of the those to beat the odds.

Was he a smoker or diabetic, I thought they were some the primary factors involved in pancreatic cancer?

Also did he go for testing because of physical symptoms or was this routine testing?

Pancreatic cancer took my father out in 1985 after two years of fighting it. It's a brute. Alex Trebek, may you be comforted as much as possible, whether or not you beat it. :love_heart:

Alex now does commercials for Penn Life selling life insurance to the elderly. I think the company does this because he can relate with the senior population.

I never heard anything derogatory about Alex, so I presume he is a decent person. I wish him the best with his battle.

Yesterday there was an interview with Alex on CBS Sunday Morning. He talked about writhing in the floor in his dressing room. :( Also said recently he's been wearing a hairpiece. Must be a good one, Jane Pauley couldn't tell.
Crossing fingers for you, Alex.

@ Ken N Tx

That's the Good Morning America interview with Robin Roberts from a couple weeks ago - similar to the CBS Sunday Morning one with Jane Pauley (which was more recent (yesterday) and 'casual' ). Here it is:

UPDATE:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek says his doctors say he's in "near remission" of advanced pancreatic cancer and his response to the treatment is "kind of mind-boggling."
The 78-year-old TV personality tells People magazine he's responding very well to chemotherapy and the doctors have told him "they hadn't seen this kind of positive results in their memory."
Trebek says some of the tumors have shrunk by more than 50%.

Update,update......heard on the news that today is his birthday......79. Hope he continues to improve ...

I hope he recovers, too. But for reasons unknown to me, with celebrities, they always report favorable improvements regardless of how bad things are. They did that with Patrick Swayze & Michael Landon & several other celebrities.
You may recall Christopher Reeve being paraded around, talking about some miracle protein they've identified that regenerates damaged nerves. Yeah....every other person in his condition has never walked, but HE is "special" & he will walk again.
My take on it: Celebrities are used to encourage funding/donations.

Well, greed is so rampant today, I wouldn't be surprised.
