All-American girl' turned jihadist

But let's all bear in mind that, so far, we do not have any evidence in front of us. For all we know she was kidnapped, brainwashed like cultists do, and had no mind of her own. Recall the suicide cults (Jonestown, Heaven's Gate, Kanungu Cult) and the consequences of brain washing. Perhaps this happened to her. We don't know at this point. Let's wait for all the facts to be fully disclosed, analyzed, and conclusions drawn by informed jury members before we reach judgment.
Good point "oldiebut goody. I blame it on the media who is often so desperate to print the next BIG news story that often they "jump the gun" before they have all the facts. I have seen this over and over.

So, instead of prison, violent criminals and murderers should receive mental therapy, and when deemed cured, released back into society, or?
Nope....IMO, mental illness should NOT be used as an excuse for a murderer. I'm not a fan if Islam and Sharia Law, but I think those people have it right.....a murderers trial is held on Monday, and the execution is conducted on Tuesday.

These Jihadists either didn't read their Qurans or ignored the parts that forbid the "killing of innocents" and declare suicide a major sin (suicide bombers). I watched a documentary on how people (in it mostly young men) are indoctrinated. Definitely brain washing going on. I couldn't believe one young man's mother said she'd feel honored if her son died as a suicide bomber!! WTH! After watching the show, I could see that their methods were affective. I have no sympathy or mercy for this woman.
Seems to me you are right on the nose with your final sentence, OneEyedDiva. She certainly is over 18 and of a voting age. Too often in these stories we tend to blame the parents or some boyfriend/girlfriend, the community, bad luck, brainwashing, etc. People just need to smarten up and say NO! There was a campaign maybe 20 years ago that said "Say NO to Drugs." Saying no could apply many things including driving and using a smartphone at the same time or throwing garbage out your vehicle window. If you ask me, more people need to learn to say NO in more bad situations.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with your assessment of the Quran. The Quran does contain passages supporting violence directed against non-believers who oppose Islam, and just as importantly, Muslims are also guided by a study of the life and actions of the Prophet Muhammad, who let's face it, was not exactly a pacifist. A web site ( https://www.thereligionofpeace.com/ ) attempts to document attacks made around the world in the name of Islam against non believers. Month of January: 140 attacks, 723 killed, 389 injured.

That may well be true of the Koran. But it is also true of the Bible and more people have been killed in its name than for any other reason in human history, sad to say.

Did you know that in some states, Idaho comes to mind, mental illness is not a legal defense for murder. 💁‍♀️
That is because they do not recognize the insanity defense, as Insane is a legal term/doctrine, not medical, as states are not required to allow for an insanity defense, but most do. A medical evaluation will allow the Judge to determine the proper sentence though, such as, the execution of a detacto mentally retarded person is Unconstitutional, etc.

Maybe it's unconstitutional, but it certainly happens.

"On June 20, 2002, the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling ending the death penalty for individuals with intellectual disability. In Atkins v. Virginia, the Court held that it is a violation of the Eighth Amendment ban on cruel unusual punishment to execute death row inmates with “mental retardation”."

Why are they still being executed after this Supreme Court ruling?

"Alabama has executed an intellectually disabled death-row prisoner who was sentenced to death by his trial judge despite a non-unanimous sentencing..."

"There is no categorical ban on the execution of people with mental illness. ... mentally ill death-row prisoner who may be incompetent to be executed, ..."

I happen to be reading about the rise of Islam at the moment and it is not a religion of love, peace and harmony. The atrocities being committed by the current ISIS group are replicating the actions of the first Muslims.
Some people's minds seem to be open to persuasion. I can't help stating that this is what is happening at the moment in our society, with so many twisted ideas being forced on the public. The worrying thing is that so many are accepting it.

The Islam I studied and was exposed to teaches love and respect for others. We are not supposed to impose Islam on others but teach about it and let people decide for themselves. The Quran forbids "killing of innocents" But just as in the Bible, which also contains violence in some passages, we are to fight back if we are attacked (the eye for an eye thing in the Bible). However Muslims are taught "harm no one if they do not harm you". So I state yet again that ISIS and the other violent sects of Islam are not truly following the religion. Suicide is a big sin in Islam, so is lying on God. Those groups are guilty of both when they use Allah's name to justify violence and when they commit suicide bombings.

Read the history of the violence perpetrated by Christians (or those claiming to be Christians). There were/are many events! BTW, I was a Christian for most of my life. @Lavinia @ElCastor And this has been discussed on the forum before where others pointed out what @oldiebutgoody replied above: "

Personally I'm an agnostic, but in all fairness the Crusades and Spanish Inquisition ended centuries ago. This is the here and now and hundreds die every month in the name of Islam. Check out the link ...

It will be recalled that Bush called his wars upon the Middle East a "crusade". Those wars killed one million people. This again proves that it is the Christians (not Muslims) who are the world's greatest murderers.

I'm not going to continue this argument, but needless to say I completely disagree. Once again, as an Agnostic I think I can be objective.

It would take hours to unpack all the BS contained in those three short sentences.

How do we know it really happned? Or is it a made up story to teach the folly of jealousy!
Don't know why I even said that part. Forget I said that! Make believe it only says Murder is a normal human activity. Thank you.

Thats easy kill them all ,throw out some bandaids, call it a Humanitarian Mission, said to me one time coming into a hot zone.

This whole subject shows up the worst of human nature. The fact of the matter is that a large number of people are violent, they actually enjoy killing and destroying. They are just looking for a way to justify it. Therefore they will take any teaching and interpret it in a way which suits their purpose.
