All these accidents in the news?

There seem to be an unusual number of planes and helicopters crashing, and boats sinking. I know this happens all the time, but I've been seeing an unusual number of these disaster stories. Is something going on, or it is just a matter of what gets reported?

Not much else for tabloids to report right now. Then you have to look at who is involved.
People dying in helicopter and plane crashes is not tabloid fare!! It is real life tragedies happening to real people and bringing heartbreak to their families.

There has literally been an airplane crash or mishap almost every day. A few days before the helicopter crash, there was another crash into a neighborhood, narrowly missing homes. And not long before that, one in the parking lot of a retirement community's building. Some cars caught fire, but blessedly (and miraculously), no one was injured. The latest was a crash in Boca Raton, Florida a couple of days ago, in which 3 people were killed.

It is a tragedy for those involved. Yes! For tabloids and media it is bluntly spoken clicks. Crashes have not gotten more they have just gotten more published. Year to date 200+ crashes this year.

in August of 1985, I flew into Dallas a day after the crash of a Delta jet, which was an L-1011. The L-1011 was considered to be the safest plane in the sky at that time. This crash was caused by a microburst during a thunderstorm. A microburst is a sudden down draft that can drive a huge plane like the L-1011 into the ground.

When I landed in Dallas the day after the crash, I was able to view the plane sitting over by the Delta hangar. What I saw was nothing more than a pile of burnt aluminum. Seeing that quickly reminds a pilot that he needs to be hyper-vigilant when landing during thunderstorms. Today’s planes are equipped with systems that alert pilots when microbursts are possible. Some of the larger airports also have advanced technical equipment that will also detect wind shear issues, which is where microbursts hide. In turn, the Controllers will alert pilots that microbursts are possible.

Pilots are also trained while in simulators how to detect and respond to dangerous thunderstorms. I was approaching Kansas City when my warning detector alerted us that windshears were present and a microburst was possible. I made the decision to abort the landing and go into a holding pattern for 20 minutes or until the storm had cleared the airport. I know it upsets some of the passengers, but it’s all about safety. I want to live as much as they do, so I take the appropriate action when I think it’s necessary to do so.

Sadly, IMHO, the news programs love a good disaster. The more the merrier in their book. If enough kids choked on lollypop sticks they'd hop on that until you'd think that every third or fourth child with a lollypop was on the brink!

Plane crashes, like any other public transportation source are great sources to boost news ratings. Sort of a sad thought but in my mind - - true.
