Am I The Only Pot Stirrer?

For more information go to: http://www.alfa.org/alfa/Ageism.asp

Ageism is a form of discrimination and prejudice, particularly experienced by seniors. Most seniors are mentally and physically active regardless of age with a great deal to contribute. However, societal norms marginalize seniors, treat them with disrespect, make them feel unwelcome and otherwise generalize as if they were all the same.

Ageism robs seniors of choice, independence, dignity and negatively impacts their quality of life. ALFA seeks to illuminate discriminatory practices that adversely affect seniors’ lives, illuminate prejudicial attitudes toward the aging process, and institutional practices that perpetuate stereotypes about seniors. ALFA aligns and supports programs that break traditional notions of aging. In 2011, the 2011 Short Film Competition, the Senior Living Art Showcase and a partnership with the Age of Champions documentary underscored our commitment to speaking out against ageism. In 2012, the 2012 Short Film Competition and the 2012 Senior Living Art Showcase continued ALFA's efforts to combat negative age-based stereotypes.

Perhaps I am mistaken, but it seems to me that most difficulties posters may have with Lon arise from differences of perspective rather than ageism. Certainly mine do. I would call him out on some of his posts regardless of his birth date.

However, if I truly believed he was experiencing cognitive decline, I would walk away, rather than engage in a cruel and pointless argument with someone who could no longer debate. I hope he would do the same for me.

Geez, how can you miss the whole point? I thought you were smarter than that.

I am a Gerontologist and there is a stereotype about old people being constipated all the time and need prunes. I don't believe in perpetuating stereotypes and I will speak out about them when I see them. If Lon where a black man and the poster told him to go and "have some watermelon and fried chicken" I'm sure people would have said something. Ageism is something that isn't well known. I have listened to people here talk about Islamophobia and Zenophobia and I have respected that is something we don't want to be. I don't think we want to be Ageist either, do we? There is much more to Lon than being old.

Ruth... take it easy. It was a joke made because Lon started a thread in the HEALTH section about who regularly drank prune juice. It was not meant to be an ageism reference. We are ALL old here for crying out loud.. It would be a matter of the pot calling the kettle black.. relax.

Hmmm. I don't believe I missed the point at all. But even if I did, your comment is rude and accusatory.
And your comment is judgemental, too. I was referring to the links and information I have posted and thought you would have understood ageism but it seems you did not or you are on another trail maybe. Accusatory? Geez, do you want to take me to court on that? So judicial. Seems to me you may take things to personally when I did not mean to offend but to teach with what I have put forth in this thread.

Listen, QS, I don't interfere when you feel you are right about something and you don't really understand what I am talking about so Back off!! Just because you don't understand what I am talking about doesn't mean I don't have a right to say it!!!

You seem to equate a difference of opinion with a personal attack. They are not the same thing. Why are you so angry? Why can't we simply agree to disagree? Life is short. Pax.

I did not think of it as a personal attack but thought that you felt that you were personally attacked by your last comment. I'm sorry if I offended you. I was only trying to teach about Ageism and stereotypeing which doesn't allow the individual to be seen for all that he/she is but instead a bunch of contrived stuff that is demeaning. I really like all the people on this forum and just am trying to teach something they may not be aware of for their own good and that of humanity. Peace.

I don't think you need to teach anyone here about ageism... remember? this is a SENIORS Forum. I'd venture to guess we have all experienced it. That's why it was a JOKE... about Lon's Prune Juice and Liberal insult.

There are lot of jokes about old people and prune juice in our country but I don't find it funny. It is an ageism thing.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ageism

Ageism (also spelled "agism") is stereotyping and discriminating against individuals or groups on the basis of their age. This may be casual or systematic.[SUP][1][/SUP][SUP][2][/SUP] The term was coined in 1969 by Robert Neil Butler to describe discrimination against seniors, and patterned on sexism and racism.[SUP][3][/SUP] Butler defined "ageism" as a combination of three connected elements. Among them were prejudicial attitudes towards older people, old age, and the aging process; discriminatory practices against older people; and institutional practices and policies that perpetuatestereotypes about elderly people.[SUP][4][/SUP]
While the term has also been used to describe prejudice and discrimination against adolescents and children, including ignoring their ideas because they are too young, or assuming that they should behave in certain ways because of their age,[SUP][5][/SUP] the term is predominantly used in relation to the treatment of older people. Moreover, it has been pointed out that stigmatization does not only occur outside of the cohesively imagined group of the elderly but likewise takes place within the stigmatized group itself.[SUP][6][/SUP]

Oh bloody hell!!! What is this WWIII?! The prune juice reference doesn't have a damn thing to do with ageism. Lon had previously posted a thread suggesting that liberals needed prune juice!
