American's ill informed

Not surprising that Canadian & British sources present what is going on in the rest of the world that American's don't typically hear about.

The riot in Sydney Australia by Muslims is a good example.

Not that easy to access since it was posted on facebook but worth the effort to see what Australians think about,.

It seems our mainstream media is focused on little more than Trumps latest "tweet". Major events are taking place, daily, all over the world, but little or nothing about those issues is being reported here. About the Only news source that one can check to get some idea of what is going on, globally, is Al Jazeera....on the Internet.

More and more, we are being looked upon as "mushrooms"...."Keep them in the dark, and feed them BS".

The American media did in fact cover this incident when it happened, in September 2012.

On 15 September 2012, a protest by Salafi Muslims against an alleged "anti-Islam" film Innocence of Muslims was held in Sydney, New South Wales. While the protest started peacefully, violent confrontations between police and protesters began when protesters reached the United States Consulate General.[SUP][2][/SUP] In resulting clashes, six police officers and 19 protesters were injured. The violence was condemned by Australian political leaders, including Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Police arrested nine protesters in connection with the violence.[SUP][2][/SUP]

If you listen and pay attention to the audio in the vid, the female news person mentions that the protest was in response to the "anti-Islam" film.

If you read the bold face captions scrolling up on the video, it's easy to see that this clip has been crafted to spark "anti-Islam" sentiment. Also, there's an added voice overlay making it appear that the Muslim protesters are chanting "Obama, Obama". rolleyes.gif

I think the problem in America is that you do not have a spread of National dailies like the Europeans do. New York Times and Washington Post, perhaps the Tribune, but not much of a spread. Local papers tend to concentrate on local news. I can go out tomorrow and buy perhaps a dozen nationals, of all political sympathies from the right wing Telegraph to the avowedly communist Morning Star, and virtually every shade in between, and I can do that in the smallest village shop in ant part of the country.

Similarly with your broadcast media. Most European countries have at least one state sponsored bu independent (though in some cases state controlled) broadcaster, free of commercial and advertising pressure.

...and hope that it takes them less than 4 years to read the news, eh? The mushrooms are the ones that think incidents that happened over 4 years ago are current news.

I'm not sure why you think that America(The United States) does not have comparable news publications, The U.S. has many large, world class cities, each of which has at least one major news outlet.

The US press doesn't cover world events, not the way all other countries do. It is the most selfcentric free press on earth. Usually countries that don't cover world news have government controlled news and are totally mushroomy. We have a choice and are not using it.

I'd be interested to hear how you arrived at these conclusions, appears you used a pretty broad brush to paint(or tar & feather) this picture.

most of the large news papers are chained owned. social media has taken its place. US news services can't just tell you what happened they have to analysis it. Advertisement driven for more air time.

Extensive travel in Europe for decades, reading papers and watching TV in many countries, having prolonged business dealings with people from Australia and South Africa. Certainly doesn't cover the entire world, but a lot of our international peers and friends. Our available info pales in comparison to theirs. I suppose one can dig more info up, but what we get from the popular news media is all US centric.

I can't speak for other countries but Australians have always been thirsty for news from overseas. Since the very first days of the colonies, ships carrying news from England were eagerly awaited and since we are now one of the most multicultural communities on the planet this eagerness has expanded to just about every corner of the globe.

A note about the video in the original post - yes it is very old news and this situation has not been repeated. The Muslim community on the whole is keen to present a peaceful image and this kind of unruliness is discouraged. One thing that did come out of it is that the authorities were able to identify the ring leaders and keep them under surveillance. Several of them have had orders made against them that prevent them from travelling overseas and other activities that lead to terrorism. Our police and security organisations have a good track record at disrupting would be terrorists. Prior to NYE they swooped on a small group planning something deadly. With Australia Day coming up on 26th next I expect that we might hear that more arrests have been made.

Another reason why Australians are interested in world events is that we are enthusiastic travellers with a very high proportion of the population having passports. Some only go as far as Bali but a great many take trips to Europe, Asia and America. Once bitten by the travel bug interest in the countries visited is aroused.

Our local paper (the Washington Post) covers world news extensively in its main section (Section A). The other sections cover local, sports, and entertainment news. On Sunday there are additional sections, such as Travel and a section called Outlook, which has a selection of scholarly essays about world events. On Tuesday there is a Health & Science section. It is a very comprehensive newspaper.

Not surprising that Canadian & British sources present what is going on in the rest of the world that American's don't typically hear about.

The riot in Sydney Australia by Muslims is a good example.

Not that easy to access since it was posted on facebook but worth the effort to see what Australians think about,.

I don't find that our Canadian television news presents a better understanding of world events at all. I haven't read an actual newspaper in decades but as of a couple years ago, I've sort of given up on hearing the 'whole story' via CBC or CTV.

I've read about events going on in Europe that might be embarrassing to the Canadian government or the American government (on alternate sites) and doing a check into CBC or CTV or CNN or MSNBC, etc., find that oftentimes, they aren't mentioned at all.

One example was when Ukraine was imploding and 45 people in Odessa got burned to death deliberately by the rioters who wanted to get rid of the elected government, our North American news outlets didn't even mention it. BBC has a slightly better track record in my opinion although they can be very biased in their reporting, but at least they're 'more likely' to report.

Now I only watch CBC to see how the 'talking heads' are reacting to our local government policies and activities.

Please be very careful with comments in order to avoid a lawsuit.
I find the report about M.T. fascinating (even more her background!)

They cover it but unless the readership including internet shows interest by clicking on the channel or viewing the story it will be on to the next story if one is so lucky or they will milk the same story into oblivion. Throw in some editorial bias yes many international stories won't get the attention they deserve.
